Oh, just wanted to point out that her Degree from WGU satisfied the fresh from college requirement. Any doubters about WGU not being the real deal this is another success story.

    Thanks :)

One other (non-IT) thing I'm celebrating is my diet. When I was working graveyards, I gained 15 pounds in about a month and a half. I weighed 139 at my worst 2 months ago so I started dieting since I didn't have time to work out with my crazy schedule. I kept track of everything with MyFitnessPal. Two months later, I'm down to the normal weight I had during my entire 20's which is 125. I celebrated both the new job and the diet success today by going to Banana Republic and dropping money on some new business suits. I'm probably oversharing but I'm feeling proud today :)

I wouldn't call it non-IT. It seems many of us have this problem. I gained 45 lbs between 2007 and 2011. I lost all of it over the last nine months, also using MyFitnessPal. Unfortunately, all the savings from how much less I was eating and eating out went straight to new clothes and alterations. Anyway, congrats on your gain and your loss.

    Congrats!

Not that it means much now since it obviously landed you a job, but I did spot some opportunity for improvement on your resume. ;)

Congrats! This sounds like a very nice opportunity for you. Congrats on the weight loss, too. I lost 26 pounds last year doing P90X and watching my food intake.

Grats! Let's play Diablo 3! I haven't played that game for a month or so.

Congratulations Iris. I hope to be writing the same type of post in 18 months to 2 years when I finish up my degree.
Thanks for giving me a nice objective to shoot for.

    All the best,

Did you try P90X+? I haven't done either, to be honest.

I just run during the mornings. Until recently I tried to go a step further and now I have shin splints icon_rolleyes.gif. So I'm stuck on the elliptical. I figure all those Pizzas, iHOP pancakes, and the like can supply me with my needed energy. I've been counting calories.

Wendy's small chili. That's some good, healthy stuff. Cheap, too.

If you look back at what I used to tell most people when I had time to actually critique resumes on here, I bet you could figure it out. ;)

Don't have time to go into detail now, gotta get on the road.

Thanks for sharing your story. I like to come on the job board and look for motivation when I slow down on my studies. This has definitely helped me get motivated to get cracking again.

Good luck with your new job!

Congrats on the new job! Good luck on your interview in San Jose, I worked in SJ for a few years, if you move there, try and find a place close to the company. The traffic is a B

I'm driving to SJ after work today and interviewing at 8AM in the morning. I figure I'll let them give me their best offer and consider it. Per my friend that just started working there, it's a pre-IPO startup that's scheduled to go public next year. When he was hired a month ago for an entry level network engineer job, he was given stock in the company, relocation money, health/dental/vision, certification reimbursement, 401K, 10 paid holidays and 20 PTO days a year. If they offer me the same deal with slightly more pay than he's getting (He had ZERO certifications and ZERO networking knowledge), I could see myself doing it. I could live rent free up there since I'll just take my parent's guest house. We'll see though. I might be getting ahead of myself.

Normally, I would caution against this sort of thing, as most startups either fail or get bought, and in the case of failure, your stock is basically worth nothing, and the other risk involve makes it a not good long term career decision.

However, given that you weren't planning on staying in the area long due to your SO's residency, it's something that I would actually consider.

The SO doesn't know if she's going to San Jose either. It depends where some computer in Canada decides it wants her. Fingers crossed that I don't end up in the middle of BFE.

I've completed 2 phone interviews that lasted an hour each with the company. I received an email today stating that I need to block off all morning for the interview since it'll be at least 5 hours long and I'll be interviewing with 7 different people consecutively. This interview process is a marathon. I'm exhausted just thinking about tomorrow's interview.

It's true that there are most risks in a startup. But I LOVE STARTUPS. And I personally would jump at another startup if I found the right opportunity. I've done about 4 different startups and I love every moment of them.

Being bought is not a bad thing - for most startups that IS the exit strategy. Generally, I prefer startups where the exit strategy is a a buy-out. And if the liquidity event results in the ability to exercise any options/stock, that is an extra bonus.

I respectfully disagree that the risk is not a good long-term career decison. There are inherently significant benefits to being at a startup. One of the biggest benefit is the exposure to an actual growth company where your impact is lot more significant because at most startups, people wear many hats.

Sounds like what I just went through. 6.5 hours with 5 people including lunch. At interviewer 5, I started to wain a bit and needed coffee, badly. She noted it and offered a cup. Hopefully, you'll get a nice lunch and make sure you're hydrated. Selling yourself for that long gets old, quick. Warnings aside, I nailed the job and am sure you will as well. Question is, does the Canadian computer want you in SF or BFE? :)

The interview ended up being 8.5 hours long with 7 people. My brain hurts. Gonna ice it with alcohol. Will post later. Went well

    Welcome back home!

An 8 hour interview? That's the longest I've heard.

Glad to hear it went well Iris. I think the longest interview I've ever had was 2.5 hours, so your 8 hour epic blows that out the water!
