Help required on some CCNA topics

Hey folks
I am studying for ICND at the moment and i want some help on the following topics
1) VLSM ( i really want to understand this topic once and for all! Any nice ideas or methods using which i can do VLSM in short time)
2) ACL's (i cannot figure out when is it the best interest to put in or out etc)

For the ACL question, it depends on what traffic you want to filter. For example, there is a router connecting several internal network segments to an external network, if:
1. you want to filter UDP traffic from the external network to all the internal network segments, you can apply the ACL for inbound traffic on the interface connected to the external network.
2. you want to filter all UDP traffic to one of the internal network segments, you can apply the ACL for outbound traffic on the interface connected to that network segment.
