CCENT, if you used a router for studying, which one was used?

Which one did you use?

can get hold of a 877 if necessary but going to be difficult..

need to get on with studying but cant work out what router i need.. peeing me off

I'd recommend getting the 2600 series - you can pick up 2610XM's pretty cheap on eBay. That way, you have a good start on a lab moving forward.

When i was on ICND1 i started building my lab and it was complete before i sat for the test my lab consists of:
3 2620XMs
3 2950 switches
1 wic 2T card
2 wic 1T cards
NM 1e
if your thinking about heading into CCNA Voice/Security or CCNP i'd try to find a 2800 series router some where too

im sorted on the switch department, got 2x 2950s.

But i completely baffled with what router i need..

All 4 routers have a WIC-2T & WIC-1DSU-1T module

Shouldn't be baffled anymore, pick up a simple 2620 (or 2621 as it gives you two FE ports) or XM series as it supports more flash/dram and 12.4 IOS and you are good to go.

But having a 2503 is not enough?

2600xm series for me, too.

No need to spend huge amounts on hardware, to be honest. If you've got a decent PC you can use GNS3, works very well.

i just checked ebay and the 2503 is going to $35 to $40 and the 2620XM is starting at about $50 so for that price difference i'd just get the 2620xm and be done with it.

It should be okay, if you already have it. I don't think it will run 12.4, so the commands may be slightly different.

If you're looking at buying one, I would get one with 12.4 on it.

Right as rain. If you buy equipment that is inadequate to fully cover the CCENT/CCNA objectives and then bomb a sim or interview, it won't be due to your budget. Good luck, mate.

what about 837? what version of IOS can be installed on this device? what IOS comes standard? Got plenty of these spare in the office. We do not use anymore

Use the Cisco feature navigator to figure it out:
Cisco Feature Navigator - Cisco Systems

Click Search by Platform. You can use it to figure out which versions of IOS will run on a device and what the DRAM/Flash requirements are.

Do you even need a router for CCENT? I passed mine having only owned a 2950. I did have a year of experience though.

You gotta learn how to pull that up from the cisco site, they have charts that show what IOS is supported or any given device. Even still, the ones you have may have X version of the same version of IOS and another person may have a different version due to license/contract difference or bundle.

For CCENT / CCNA you don't need high end equipment, 12.4 is not a MUST but nice to have, that's why 25xx still work.

Packet Tracer is good enough for CCENT and even CCNA. It just won't cover some of the things you'll learn with physical hardware....

I , like everyone else, also have pretty much all 2600XMs for my routers. I have 1 2600 for Frame Relay. If you keep looking on eBay you can get them for good prices.
