Not sure why you want to know what everyone has here. If you have at least some A+ knowledge, then you should have no problem buying your ideal laptop.

Spare/IT certs: Dell Precision M6400: 17", 2.53 core 2 duo extreme, 16GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, 1 GB Nvidia Quadro FX.

My dell is a little overkill, but wanted something to get me through at least CCNP. I was upgrading every two years. Though its a four year old model now, still keeps up with the latest laptops :)

So looks like Dell, Lenovo and Asus's are the popular laptops now a days.

I'm buying a new laptop next year. Probably HP. I don't really use one at the moment. Just desktops. I'm gonna get something with Haswell and the GT3 Intel graphics because those will be fully compatible with Linux by the time they hit the streets.

Tossing up, been using a Macbook Black 13.3" 2,1 for 6 years thinking about the Macbook Pro 15" Retina but the price is steep. The laptop market is a joke, so many models and so hard to compare them. I believe this is why Apple is killing it with their laptops, simple and easy.

I wouldn't mind something that could hammer the games though.

I have a Lenovo w520, i7 2720 processor, 16GB Ram (4x4GB), 256GB SSD + 750GB HDD in the CD slot (adapter for this, it is hot swappable with the CD Rom Drive), 120GB mSATA drive, 1GB Quaddro Card + a true docking station.

I love this laptop. It is a true powerhouse and was not that expensive (with upgrades I think $1500 + docking station). Only downside is the screen resolution is a little low at 1280x768 or something. Dont really notice it very much though.

It also has a built in CAC reader which was a huge selling point for me.

The native screen resolution on that laptop is 1920 x 1080. Check your settings.

I bought a Dell XPS 15z a few days ago, according to UPS tracking I should have a note saying they missed me for a delivery lol.

It was from the 2011 line but Dell had marked them down significantly due to the newer XPS laptops. Since this will be used for VMs and studies I didn't need/want to pay more for a better looking display. Ordered 16gb of ram to upgrade, Dell says it only supports 8gb but online others say it supports 16gb

Its 1600x900, the 1080 screen resolution was an optional $150 or $200 upgrade but I opted not to.

Nice to read others had similar ideas & have slightly older work horses such as the Lenovo W700. I remember back in 2008 reading Dell & Lenovo etc were some of the most expensive out $4,000-$6,000. Now they are quite reasonable. Even with upgrades to twin 500GB drives and 16GB ram. Mine was still under $1,500.

One of the reasons I went with the dell was its native 1920x1200 LCD. Does anyone else still prefer 16:10 res vs 16:9 ? :)

Whats the whole appeal with the mac's? Everyone I know who has one loves it. I keep trying to play with them too see what the big deal is and just don't get the appeal.

    1. They're flashy.
    2. They're easy to use.
    3. They're flashy.
    4. They're generally rock-solid stable and reliable. . .
    5. It's a prestigious name.
    6. Many of them (not all!) will last doggone near forever, even if they're outdated
    7. There's some compatibility with legacy Unix and Open Source applications, and a Unix command line for the techies
    8. Did I mention they were flashy?

My only hesitance now is the Mac Tax. I just wouldn't pay that price nowadays. Linux and cheap used laptops have spoiled me. :D
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.
