Visio training for Network Diagrams

Hi guys!

Do you have any recommended training for creating Network diagrams using Microsoft Visio?

I have no experience in creating diagrams and need to get up to speed. I've looked at some and it seems like the paid classes offer more than just networking; I am looking at just understanding networking diagrams.

How did you get into creating diagrams?

IMO, I think training to create network diagram is a waste of money. Visio is a simple enough tool, that if you're in the networking industry, you're smart enough to figure out how to use it.

Personally, I start out with the core of my network, then I branch out and create a rough draft just to see how everything connects. Once that's done, I clean it up, and make it look pretty/organize. Also, separate out your physical and logical topology. You don't need every single piece of equipment (for example, L2 access switches) on a logical diagram.

    The first link I couldn't take that woman's voice/accent

The second link is pretty good! I'm on the second video now (you have to do it in sequence). I can already see how it will be beneficial!

I would not pay to learn Visio. I got better by looking at other engineers diagrams and also by looking at diagrams in Cisco Press books, as well as using google image searches. Collecting a good number of stencils from different vendors and technologies is also a good start. Practice, practice, practice...

Learning to use Visio is kind of like learning to use Word or Excel. Just put some effort into it and you'll mature your ability to create useful diagrams.

sieff hit the nail on the head ...just explore a little in Google if your shop does not already have a bunch on a share or something. The more you do it the more comfortable you get. I never once took a class and I create all of ours for the enterprise, I actually find it pretty fun icon_lol.gif
