new job-job

I have officially accepted a new position and put in my 2 weeks notice at my current company.

My current role is Access Management, a lot of file rights, creating and terminating user accounts, vpn, shared mailboxes, etc.. been doing it a little short of a year, promoted from the Service Desk at the same company, on the SD about 1 year.....

This message board got me interested in the CCNA, studying the CCNA got me interested in Networking, applied for the NOC at my current company, didn't get it.. started looking around.

As I posted in another thread, I was looking for a bit, asking for a lot more money, got interviews, but never got a job.. but i felt most of them went pretty good, but one I bombed big time....

so I lowered my asking price....

Had an interview for a Network Admin, night shift, had an interview and an offer the same day....

I'll be getting a small ever so tiny raise, about $760 a year, but I'll get more experience, a better title, less work hours, closer to home, no paying to park, and most importantly a foot in the door....

12 hour rotating shift, 7pm-7am, 3 days on then 2 days off and then the following week it would be 2 days on and then 3 days off.

The blue days are the days I would work

Network Admin -Job Description
XXXXX is looking for someone who has
· Experience working with various routing protocols
· Cisco network equipment experience
· Knowledge of LAN and Wan
You will be responsible for maintaining all systems, applications, security and network configurations. You would also be testing and evaluating network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements as needed. You will be providing technical support and guidance to users.

So I'm pretty excited. I never worked nightshift before, but I doubt it will phase me. And it actually may work out better for my wife and I for child care arrangements. It is contract to hire, 3 months, but I figure anywhere has a probationary period, and I have a chance of going up in salary after that 3 months, so that's looking good.

Congrats! As someone who has been lucky enough to get stuck in 9-5 shifts (currently 7:30a - 5:30p four days a week), that schedule looks bonkers to me, but with all the benefits considered it sounds like a good gig.

Congrats. Get the networking experience under your belt, say 2 years or so and apply somewhere asking for more money.

Congrats man! Looks like a great opportunity. Learn, learn and learn more. Know more than you co-workers. You've got to desire to know more than your peers, be the go-to man. Know enough so people say - Ask Mike. O ask Mike, he knows it all. I know you've got it in you, just make it happen. Use the downtime to study up your CCNP or work on the VCP. If you combine the CCNP with the VCP and the experience, you'll be gold.

    Good luck man!

My interview wasn't very technical really, mostly covered by them saying "he has his CCNA"

but they did ask me to describe SNMP, some easy subnetting questions, some very basic troubleshooting, and asked me a few random commands

A little word of advice: Get a desktop calendar (like the little square ones) that shows not just the date, but what day of the week it is. Sounds silly, but I've worked enough staggered night shifts to know how easy it is to forget what day it is. You might not have that problem, but I sure as hell did!

    AND.....congrats!!!

Good suggestion. My dad worked grave for 30 years and had never had set days off. Tuesday/Thursday off was one of the worst schedules he would get. He could never remember the day of the week but amazingly he never missed work. Now retired, he still is bad at remember the days of the week but maybe it is because he doesn't have a reason to. icon_lol.gif

good suggestion, I am thinking of setting up a shared calendar for my wife and kids and I that labels what days I do and don't work to help them keep up with me

i am really excited, but I must say, whenever I tell people about it they are like "great!" then I say "nightshift" and almost everyone is like "oh that sucks"

so everyone but my wife and TE want to rain on my parade. but i think nights will be a nice change of pace

It's your parade. I was told that pursuing computers was a bad decision for my personality in 1989. It was my parade so I hired my own drummer to lead and paid him well. It has worked out for me. If you are happy with the decision then go for it. If nobody wanted to work nights there would be no 3rd shift. ..........My two cents.

    Congratz and best of luck!
That is one thing that turns me off from working in a NOC or as a Net Eng --- the initial hours seem to be graveyard usually, but the days off rock!
