New job

I was just offered a position in a corporate NOC. I'll be monitoring the network and applications using various monitoring tools. In addition to monitoring everything I'll also get to work on projects that will get me more experience with server operating systems, the usual rack and stacks in the data center. Plus I will be able to get experience with VMware and Cisco Nexus gear. It really sounds like a great opportunity for me to grow my career.
As far as pay it's a pretty good increase in my hourly salary. With working 8 hours overtime every other week in my current job it pretty much evens out the hourly rate since I'll be going back to working 8 hour shifts. But at least this way I'll be getting to spend more time with my family.
The company wants me to start on the Oct 15th but I'm trying to get that pushed back to Oct 22nd to give my current employer a full two weeks notice. I really do want to start right away but I know giving my current employer 2 weeks notice really is the right thing to do.

lantech Member Posts: 329Of course I'll be hammering out a few certs. I'll be finishing my CCNA and looking to get a few other certs. Maybe update my Microsoft certs and look into VMware certs as well. And of course there is always on to the CCNP, can't forget that one.
I should have more time to study since I won't be working 12 hour shifts anymore. Plus the NOC manager seems pretty good about mentoring people and wanting people to expand their skills into areas that interest them. So much to learn in this business and so little time.2012 Certification Goals

If you don't mind can you tell us what your current position is? The one you're about to leave? -
lantech Member Posts: 329Currently I'm an Operations Technician in a data center. We are basically a colocation provider for companies that want to be in a data center but aren't large enough to have their own data center.
Currently I do cabling, installation of PDUs into cabinets, rack and stacks of servers and other equipment, diagnose and repair servers and Windows Server OS from Windows NT 4.0 and up when customers request it. Manage vendors when they are onsite, monitor power, cooling and the network, respond to data center emergencies.
I'm basically a JOAT.2012 Certification Goals

I'm curious how you got into the current position you're leaving. Did you gradually move into it from desktop support or was it your first IT position after school? I'm asking because I'm a desktop guy with network experience trying to move up. -
Mike-Mike Member Posts: 1,860And if they don't I should be able to move on pretty quickly with the Nexus experience.
@mike mike, that's ok. We'll just get into a negative rep war

lantech Member Posts: 329This time around I started out running data cable including fiber for several years. Then the contracting company I was working for got me a job working on some servers for a couple of different companies. When the last job was over I was a parts monkey for a Dell contractor replacing parts onsite. After a couple months of that I landed my first of two jobs in a Fortune 500 data center upgrading Dell servers, racking and stacking the servers and running fiber for the servers. When that contract ended I went to a very large bank to work in their data center. This job included managing vendors, a few rack and stacks that the vendors weren't allowed to rack and stack and some other duties. But my contract would have been good for only about 8 more months before I had to leave for another job because they didn't hire contractors and there was no contract extensions allowed. So when I proposed to my wife I found this job which is a permanent full time position.2012 Certification Goals

Yes we can. I'll be training for the first two weeks shadowing someone. The third week I'll be following a guy on the night shift. So I'm not sure how much of the job I'll see before then. I really hope I do get the opportunities that he said he could give me.2012 Certification Goals
