Hi having problems understanding ownership in ntfs,
If an administrator takes ownership of a file , would the original owner /creator be able to take it back
Just wondering

The creator of the file can always take ownership of it, even if the administrator deny's him/her full control.
This is done by right clicking the file, click on properties, then go to the security tab (you'll get some memo telling you that you cannot do anything with the settings..bla..bla..bla), then click the owner tab... then choose owner. (make sure you have simple file sharing turned off)
Hope this helps. -

Once an administrator has ownership of the file the file becomes his/hers (they become the owner). The administrator can then however grant the Take Ownership permission to a user that wants to become the owner.
Hope this helps too... -

If an administrator took ownership of a file you created,
could you take back ownership even if the administrator had given ownership to another user.
And if you can re take ownership would the last owner lose the ownership
.
hope this makes sense it all sounds like blah blah blah to me -

To get ownership of a file you need the Take Ownership permission, if you havent you will need it assigned to you, if you dont have/get this permission then you won't be able to own the file again.... If you have the Full Control NTFS permission you will also have the Take Ownership permission, however you can check the Effective Permissions by clicking the advanced button found on the Security tab.
Hope this helps... it can be a little confusing
