I hate waiting after an interview,

LamplightLamplight Member Posts: 66 ■■□□□□□□□□
Alright, so I interviewed for a NOC position. The interview went well, and I passed the assessment but it's been six days. I sent a thank you note, and the reply was "I'll be in touch soon regarding next steps" I haven't heard anything, but it's killing me because this is a really good company and I want the job!

This is the first time I've ever had to wait after an interview.

How do you handle the waiting?

The waiting does suck. No way around it but to be patient.

That being said, if it has been a week with no contact I'd send a follow up letting them know you are very interested and asking what the next steps are.

    Good luck!

You got that right. Well, I sent a thank you note, and she said she'd be in touch. So, from that I assumed that I got the job.

I don't want to be a pest. Should I call or send an email tomorrow?

I would follow up either by phone or email, your choice. If you try to contact them every day that may be seen as a pest, but one week after they told you they'd follow up with the next steps is acceptable. It shows you are interested in the position.

I usually get nervous after a couple of days - having said that - here in the UK most jobs seem to go through agencies and they tend to be the pest (thankfully). But I agree - after a week I'd get in touch again. If I had an interview on a Monday and haven't heard anything the following Monday - I'd call - ONLY if you got the number officially obviously - if the main contact was via email - send one.

I'm with you on the waiting.. I've been waiting 2 weeks now but it is through a recruiter. I did get a call/email and they said they would let me know once they heard something. I do know someone currently working there so I will find out one way or another..

You would be surprised how fast certain employers can be when you say you have other offers on the table (especially if they liked you during the interviews). I had two going into the weekend and I told my 3rd possible employer who said wait till next week but when I told him about the other two he got one prepared over the weekend.

I'd go ahead and contact them. They said they would be in touch with the next steps so that does sound promising.

But I'm with you, I hate waiting as well.

Getting an interview is huge in all its own. I would give them a call to get an update. Not knowing if you have been recognized for the position or not is nerve wrecking. Give them a call and find out if they are still trying to make a decision or it the position has been filled. Good luck and hope it is in your favor!

    I agree with others
If a week passed just sent them a courteous simple email asking how are things going and that you are very interested in the position.

    Im in the same position.
Ive had so so interviews this month and last week with a NOC I finally had an amazing interview, at least from my part I think it was great
I passed the test, I did good in questions, we even began joking and talking about support experience lol

If by wednesday I havent heard, I will write them
    meh

Maybe their checking your references. As others have said, follow up if it's been more then a week.

sayin she would be in touch in no way means you got the job...it just means she would get back to you to let you know your status in the process.

    It is nerve-wracking still :)

In my case I got the job - numbers are crunshed and the lot - and I am waiting still for something "written on paper" - that sort of wait sucks as well - since I cannot really resign without a new contract :p

The waiting is awful. I try to get deeply involved in the gym or with my studies to pass the time.

Don't stop searching after having a successful interview either. It's an easy trap to fall into. Keep yourself occupied with expanding your options and you'll find you want be dwelling as much on that one interview.

I just called the HR lady and asked if the position had been filled. She said "No, we're still conducting interviews for other positions and we just want everyone to start at the same time" She said "You're definitely in the running, and will hear from me in a couple of days". So, pretty exciting. I hate how everything is all cryptic, though.

The worst wait I ever had was when I interviewed with Qwest about 4 or 5 years ago. I had about a 2 month wait after the first interview, then about a 2 or 3 week wait after the second interview. Then, it took them about 2 more weeks to offer the job, and it took HR about 3 months to get in contact with me to talk about salary. From there I never heard back from them. After about 2 more months I talked a buddy of mine and he let me know that the job req had been cut.

I found it kind of funny that their HR department never called me back to at least let me know. But it all worked out for the best in the long run, it gave me time to search out other job possibilities and I ended up landing a great job that paid about 40k more than Qwest was offering. So, I'm happy they dragged their feet, if they hadn't, I would have ended up taking that job and missing out on the much better job that I did take.

Wow, that's crazy. Guess what I can take from that is if I don't get the job there is always something better out there.

Wow, that's a very long stressful process. Hopefully I hear by this week so I can relieve my stress. Guess what I can take from that is if I don't get the job there is always something better out there.

I had an interview with Level 3 for a NOC position. Would've been a good start in networking but I never heard back. Course when they keep asking what you would do in a situation at your current employer and all you can say is I would esculate it to the network team because they won't let you do anything in the way of troubleshooting you know it's not going very well and know you won't be hearing back.

But I ended up getting a position at a little more money and a chance to work with stuff that I would never be able to work with there. Things like VMware, load balancers and Cisco Nexus.

Don't risk letting another opportunity pass you buy because you are waiting to hear about this position. Keep looking until you have an offer and even then keep your eye out for other things.

When one door closes another door opens. You just have to keep a positive attitude and keep looking.

True, true. I just started another job as server administrator but I don't really want to work as a server guy. I put in this app before I got this job because I have a couple friends that work there. So, when I got a phone call for an interview I was excited because this is the only NOC I heard back from.

But, even if I don't get this job, the bright side is I still have a paycheck. lol

I just feel like the NOC is where I should be.

I know that feeling, I have been looking for a job at the NOC too but so far nothing, just keep looking and continue with your studies.

Don't get too over-excited. I don't want to be glass-half-empty, but I would still keep looking for other oportunities - I had a LOT of interviews where the only rejection was the lack of any communication .. Not saying no does not automatically mean yes :)

    Good luck though ..

A member here on TE interviewed at this company, and he received a rejection letter through email. And, after speaking with a couple friends that work there a rejection email is common for them.

She said I was definitely in the running. So, hopefully!

I have a job now..it's not entirely the kind of job I want, but it's still cool stuff.

I've had delays getting return calls for various reasons, the majority being HR delays getting the background check/reference check done. Then I've had a time where their interview process was overly complex and through many different supervisors/managers. Honestly, if the interview process involves that many people to make a decision, it probably isn't going to be the best place to work (Office space reference: 8 bosses). This particular one took almost 2 months to finally send me an offer letter... By that time I had already taken another position. Then at that point they had so much time invested in getting me on board they tried to counter-offer me. I appreciated the gesture, but I was already turned off by them at that point.
