Async to Sync Serial port

For frame relay, would connecting an Async serial port (2610 router with nm) to the Sync Serial port (2500) work for one of the links or does it have to be async to asyn?

Same connector type so should work.. DB-60 synchronous ports.

NM-4A/S will work.
