ESXi 5.1 NTP

Noticed all my VM's time are way off, used vsphere client to check time setting on host, shows same time as what the vm's are showing. Went into NTP in configuration. Turned on ntp client on server, configured ntp server address of nist.gov and started service. Hit refresh but time will not update. Checked ntp setting in firewall, checked off and says it's running. Rebooted host and went back into ntp within configuration, service stopped, changed setting to start and stop with host, hit Start and then lose connection to vsphere client and get an error msg showing connection lost to host. Restarted vsphere client, times out connecting to host. Can ping the host but no vsphere client. Can i putty to host and fix vsphere client?

Mikdilly Member Posts: 309This did the trick for me:
VMware KB: Service mgmt-vmware restart may not restart hostd
Vsphere client back up and time is synched on host. What a relief. -

If your guests are using NTP (i.e. via a DC or the internet) - you need to disable time sync in the vmware tools, otherwise it can clash and you experience exactly that.My own knowledge base made public: http://open902.com -

You always want to have the time set correctly within the host. You can disable this behavior by making the necessary VMX file changes from nosoup4u's link.CERTS: VCDX #110 / VCAP-DCA #500 (v5 & 4) / VCAP-DCD #10(v5 & 4) / VCP 5 & 4 / EMCISA / MCSE 2003 / MCTS: Vista / CCNA / CCENT / Security+ / Network+ / Project+ / CIW Database Design Specialist, Professional, Associate
