Serial Lines - E1 / T1

Hi,

Not much experience with the above, but if for example when installing an E1/T1 card, is it linked to a serial interface on a router?

Just when looking through config they lines seem to be somehow linked to serial lines, e.g

card type e1 0 1

The 0 1 seems to be a reference to the Serial Lines on the router.

Like I say, not much experience on how these are setup / configured or associated.

Anyone clear this up or help me understand?

A T1 or E1 is not directly compatible with a serial interface, so a CSU/DSU is needed. The CSU/DSU will take the T1/E1 from the service provider and convert it to a serial interface that can then be connected to your router.

So can the actual serial interface on a router be an RJ45 type connection as this is what E1 cards looks to come with.
I guess I'm always thinking of Serial as DB60 type connectors.
