Serial Lines - E1 / T1

Hi,
Not much experience with the above, but if for example when installing an E1/T1 card, is it linked to a serial interface on a router?
Just when looking through config they lines seem to be somehow linked to serial lines, e.g
card type e1 0 1
The 0 1 seems to be a reference to the Serial Lines on the router.
Like I say, not much experience on how these are setup / configured or associated.
Anyone clear this up or help me understand?

I guess I'm always thinking of Serial as DB60 type connectors.
