Bob And Sally

Hi All, Just going over all my theory (Again) and I cant understand this. In Todd Lammles ICND1 book, he goes on about 2 PC's one called Bob and one called Sally. They are connected via a switch or Hub on the same network. What I cant see yet, is that say if it was a setup I had at Home, how would I know what the name of the host was in the first place ( without looking in the other PC's windows), to enable the PC to do its arp and IP resolutions, and what exactly would I do on my PC to send a piece of data to another PC on the same network, as they always use this analogy in training.
I am always assuming its a ping command, but you need to know IP address.
Thanks all

You could ping the broadcast address of the subnet. This will obviously only work for devices in the same broadcast domain, and not necessarily all devices will respond.

You could also use a program like nmap.
