Transfer credits from a community college to WGU - success stories?
majeurevis
Hey everyone,This is my first post here and I am interested in hearing any success stories from WGU students regarding transfer credits. I have 30 credit hours from a computer technology A.A.S. and am trying to figure out what would actually transfer. I have contacted my advisor and read the PDF document found on the WGU website pertaining to this, but was hoping to hear from actual students. Thanks for any information!

I had success with the transfer. I had all of my credits transfer except for a class that taught A+ material. Granted in my case the credits I had were all gen ed stuff. I think the A+ class didn't transfer since WGU breaks it into 2 courses and I didn't have the cert. I think the chances of gen ed classes transferring are pretty good, as for tech classes I don't see them transferring unless you have the cert, but that is just a guess.

Thanks for the info, Cygnus. Tech classes were exactly what I was worried about since I've already taken CCNA I, C++, Java, and XHTML. I was hoping that a couple of these would transfer over. Would it be better to wait until I get my degree to transfer, or switch to an A.S. program, complete it, then transfer?

I was / am in the same boat as you. I had taken seven classes at my local community college 1 english, 1 network, 2 math, 1 intro to computers, 1 social science, 1 humanities. WGU awarded credit for both foundation classes, one math class, two of the three language, and both social science classes. Total including certifications I transferred in 46 CU. The intro to computers and the network class didn't correspond with any WGU class.
I would suggest doing the transfer evaluation anyway just to give you a clearer picture to make a choice. For myself I still have eight classes required for my A.A.S., but with three of them being in a sequential order I figured the earliest I could graduate would be after the winter 2012 semester. I am currently in my third term and have 3.25(it sounds better then 4) classes left with ~11 weeks to go.

That's pretty awesome, Keith. How long did it take to go from 46 credit hours to where you are now? I'll try the transfer evaluation and tell you all how it went.

I started at WGU on 8/2011 and have 15 classes completed.

I had 82 credits transfer from my AAS and certs. All that stands between me and my BSIT is 39 credits. Well, that's now down to 32 since I've passed BNC1 and CUV1.
Next week I knock out BOV1 and then MGC1 the week after that. I'd love to finish in 1 term.

I agree with Keith. Have them evaluate your transcripts and see what they give you credit for. If you have some knowledge that applies to WGu courses you may be able to just sit for the exams without much study and knock those out quickly. Remember that you pay a flat rate per term and if you finish 4 courses or 15 in the term the price is the same, so it may still help you accelerate your program, plus get you the related certs, which you won't get from your local CC, at least not included in your tuition.

None of my previous technical classes transferred because they were more than 5 years old.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. It really helped give me a clearer picture of what to expect. I had a question regarding the exams and certs if anyone would mind answering? I know you can do the proctored exams with a webcam, but can you do that with the certs or is that a completely different deal? Do you have to obtain your certification in order to pass a class or can you wait until later to go and take it?

The certification exams are the "final exam" for each class and must be passed to receive credit.
All 3rd party exams must be taken at a test center. Only the WGU exams are available via webcam proctoring.

I transferred in over 60 CUs with my AAS and certs. 4 classes left to go.
