Job descriptions.

Job description.

I accepted a job offer a month back and i started work.

i have signed the contract which states my title system engineer and salary and the employement agreement.

However the job description was not attached to it so i emailed the director and requested for it.

he said he hasnt had time to review it but said once he reviews it he will mail it on my way.

i replied and said do it when u can i can wait.

its being a couple of days since I started the job and I still haven't recieved it.

I know the job tasks and what is required cause it was discussed in the interview and the job advertisement.

is it bad to work without a job description will that make my work non offical? i mean i will try and get the job description from him when i start.

I wouldn't even worry about it. I've never had a job that "fit" into the specific description that was presented to me. That's not to say that I didn't do what was on the list they provided but often I was asked to provide services that were "out of scope" of the original job description which I feel is fine as long as it's not ridiculous or completely demeaning work. It won't make your work non-official. If you get asked to do additional work, that's just extra bragging rights you can add to your resume later.

If I am supposed to be working directly from the job description I had for my current job then I guess I better go start looking in corporate dumpsters for some cable-tron hubs to practice on...

I wouldn't worry about it. You'll figure out what your responsibilities are first hand and most of the time they don't perfectly match the job description anyway. My company gave a very generic one and asked me to write my own after about 6 months(Once management realized they are clueless to what I do).

I wouldn't feel comfortable starting a job without having the description, but I don't think its the end of the world. As long as they don't start asking you to take out the trash I'm sure you won't have much of an issue.

You were already told your tasks and responsibilities, why do you feel the need to have them defined again in a formal job description?

As long as you are getting the promised salary/benefits and not being asked to take out the trash or clean the bathroom floors, I think you're alright

Just to clarify, did the job not have a description when you applied, or is just the employment agreement or contract did not come with it included? The latter is not a big deal. I wouldn't even apply for a job without a description, much less interview for it.

Get everything in writing. Always get everything in writing! Taking anyone by their word alone is never a good idea.

Considering job descriptions are rarely static or contractual I don't see a benefit of having one in writing. What are you going to do if it changes some, demand you'll only do what your original job description said? -One in writing can change just as quick as one spoken verbally.

If they tried to change what I was hired to do I'd point out the description they gave me and let them know this is what I agreed to. Then I'd start looking for a new job if they didn't want to keep their end of the bargain.

Its a two way street. You think they would just let you change to working four tens from five eights at anytime you wanted to? Nope and you shouldn't let them do something like that to you either.

Without a written job description: If they tried to change what I was hired to do I'd point out this wasn't what was described to me and let them know that is what I agreed to. Then I'd start looking for a new job if they didn't want to keep their end of the bargain.

What I'm saying is in the end they have the control. If they need to change your job duties and you're unwilling to cooperate then they can and will find someone else who is. At the end of the day written doesn't protect you from change but only helps to clarify where you were at the beginning. Positions often evolve and change over time as our technology does.

Every job I've ever been at has had different responsibilities at the end than when I started and there's nothing wrong with that.

Word of mouth and something written on paper are two very different things. What if the person that gave you this word of mouth leaves the company? What if that person just acts like they never said that? Having it in writing isn't necessarily going to make them change their mind about changing your job as it's not going to hold up in court or anything, but it's more ammunition to bring to the table than a he said she said argument.

I agree that almost every job I've had duties have changed but its always something that I get in writing on my review or other formal paperwork. I don't leave anything to just a word of mouth. I've heard too many horror stories of things promised but never put in writing and never materializing...

Horror stories like people moving to a job half a country away because they were promised a job. Yet, when they got to work, they weren't hired...

I think that's my worst horror. I can't imagine spending all of the money to get things moved to find out "Tough Luck". A lot of experience from people here on TE comes in handy. I've been saved a few times because I didn't want to end up a horror story.

I think you guys are misunderstood, I just do not have a written job description that states my responsibilities etc but I have a job agreement.

I have being here a little while and everything that they stated in the job advertisement as well as what they stated in the interview were true and I am doing what I agreed on (Did I mention I love it).

I understand your situation, I just wouldn't have gotten into it personally. I don't think it will be a big deal though. At the end of the day if they make you do things you don't think should be part of your responsibilities then just find a new job!
