Yet another pass!
Was confident heading into the exam, despite the fact that my testing center relocated without telling me (moved to a new office in the same building - still scary)(i didn't actually check beforehand, but the location on the email was the same as always)... Mid way through the exam, I started to get worried. Things started to get a little hairy. Ran into a few questions that made absolutely no sense, or I had to make a guess......
I just barely squeaked by with a 848/900.. *phew*
what a freaking relief I'm just glad to have this one behind me. I spent *way* too much time on it.
Materials used: LabSim, Darril's book, "CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide", and TE's practice exams/study guide.
Advice for anyone taking it: Study up on your encryption algorithms (Fairly small part of the exam, but I feel that if i knew them better my score would be considerably higher), access control, disaster recovery/bcp stuff. Actually, I would focus more on the businessey stuff than the technical stuff. I made a huge fuss about trying to memorize port numbers and more intricate details of authentication protocols and in the end that was a big fat waste of time (for the exam anyway)). YMMV.
Edit: One last thing - Hitting the "end exam" (or whatever) button and blowing your expectations away is an amazing feeling. I wasn't sure I would pass, never mind get 848. I was thinking i'd be under 800 if I passed at all. Pretty sure comptia just got me high.

Darril Member Posts: 1,588Congratulations on the pass. 848 is a great score and much more than just a "squeaker."
CompTIA mixes the exam up some, so what you saw might be different for others. For example, someone else might see port number questions. What came through to me from your post is that you seem to have a good understanding of the underlying concepts. If you didn't you wouldn't have gotten such a good score.
Good luck with the Project+ and 70-680.
@DoubleNNs, Good luck. Let us know how you did. -
Shawks Member Posts: 26 ■□□□□□□□□□Passed today with an 822. Glad to have this one behind me. Know your encryptions, access controls, Radius, Tacacs, ssl and tls. Some common sense questions, only a couple regarding business decisions and disaster recovery. Handful of port questions.
Resources used: Learnsmart references, Techexams.net Security exams. Briefly looked at the U-Certify from WGU, but what really helped me was the smartphone app for Android phones from Darril Gibson. CompTIA Security+ SY0-301 Mobile App on iPad, iPhone, Android Phone and Android Tablet
Everyone else in these Security threads brag about Darril's books and blogs. His praises are well deserved! Keep up the good work Darril.
Best of luck to all those sitting this exam soon.Stephen Hawks
