Microsoft announced the new name of Windows that was formerly codenamed "Longhorn": Windows Vista. It will be available in stores in 2006.

Windows Vista Beta 1 edition will be available by August the 3rd.

Should be in the first half of 2006, considering they are announcing now, and else they would have mentioned something like "in the summer of 2006", or "late 2006". Just a guess though. It seems there's not a single page indexed in Google about Windows Vista that actually refers to the new Microsoft OS.

I played with a developers beta of Longhorn, which hardly contained anything yet, but it 'looks' good. Whether it works good is something time will tell, but I'm happy with XP, so I think things can only get better.

I'm especially interested in seeing where Avalon 3-D will take things:

Microsoft updated the Windows Vista pages and added a Vista section in TechNet:

The Beta 1 is not available for download, it is available only to TechNet and MSDN subscribers.

Surely not this year, maybe a beta exam will be available next summer. I wouldn't consider it an option as a client for the MCSE track yet.

Same here. I'll probably run it in a Virtual PC as soon as I can get my hands on a copy, but I'm happy with XP, it does what I want it to do. I'll definitely buy a copy when it lands on the shelves. Some suggest it's a good idea to wait until the first Service Pack. Fair enough, but with the current response time of Microsoft to ensure timely automatic updates I'm not too worried about ending up with an unstable PC. Never run a beta version on a production system though. Every Windows OS was better than the previous version, I'm sure this will be the case again. People will have to get used to it first, which always leads to some resistance, but eventually I think Windows-users will agree that Vista is an improvement and more than just XP+bells+whistles.

I think I already reached my advertising-Microsoft limit for today, but I just wanted to share this Blog entry I stumbled on earlier because it includes some info about IE 7 beta 1:

Anti-phishing White Paper... haven't read it yet, probably a good thing, but phishing is a symptom of the disease spam, so I rather have a cure for the latter. It'll be interesting to see what version 7 will do to the bad rep of Internet Explorer.

When I posted this topic, after reading it on a news channel on tv, I searched google for Windows Vista. The only page of many thousands of results that was actually about Microsoft Windows Vista was the one at microsoft.com. Although it fits well with 'Vista', the name (and yes, some of the features) are far from original. [No, I'm not going to quote Shakespeare.]

According to Computer Weekly mag; beta 1 is out now, beta 2 comes out early 2006, and the commercial release is expected late 2006. Only a year and a half to go then!

Has anyone installed Vista Beta 1 yet? If so, what is your impression of it so far?

If you install vista make sure you have the drivers for the O.S. many of the hardware companies are starting to make drivers for the O.S. I installed vista on one of my machines but didnt have the drivers for any of the hardware so it was worthless to me. It is similar to xp but less bugs and more secure.
