Hello all;

I am currently studying towards the ICDN1 exam. I am using Tod Lammels CCNA book to study for the exam, I understand that Chapter 5 "VLSM (Variable Length Subnet Masking), Summarization.." Is not in the ICDN1 material, could you all confirm?

Just to confirm that the Chapters from this book which covers the ICDN1 material is:
1,2,3,4,6,7,8,10,12,14,16

Cheers.

Another quick question to add to the mix. Does the ICDN1 exam cover "SDM" configuration? Or is it solely just CLI (Hope this is the case as I have no experience with CISCO SDM)... Cheers.

Know how to use them and know that RIPv1 doesnt support it but v2 does

You should know how to configure basic DHCP and NAT/PAT

Yes, but does that include VLSM? I understand how to subnet and the concepts and configuration of NAT/DCHP and that RIPv1 does not support VLSM as it is a classful routing protocol and that RIPV2 does (Classless).

My question is, is VLSM covered on ICDN1?

you dont need to know VLSM
but you may see some /s around
so be sure to know whats that (255.255.255.224 vs /27)

SDM wise, it does cover some SDM, lammle book goes into it
sadly you cant emulate sdm with packet tracert but you can with gns3
if you cant get a hold of equipment or buy an image for gns3
then just watch the video of CBT nuggets on SDM
its pretty good, basic and to the point
    meh

When you refer to "you may see some /s around" - You mean CIDR right? I understand that /25 is the same as 255.255.224.0 and similar to other CIDR prefix's.

How far indepth do you need to know how to configure SDM? Hate it to be honest; CLI is defo the way to go!

Just a heads up, /25 is not the same as 255.255.224.0.

that far indepth... I never even looked at the SDM, how hard can a GUI be to figure out is what I thought.
    Lab:
Combination of GNS3 and Cisco equipment if required.

Haha cheers. ****! My mistake; Was writing the comment while at work (/25 is defo not 255.255.255.224!) /27.

Could someone clarify that VLSM is not on the exam though? No one has yet to clarify this lol.

No, it's not in ICND1. It's not that hard though, and you might as well start learning it if you plan to move on to the CCNA afterwards.
