Got my first IT entry-level job!!

I just got a job at a local computer repair shop, I will be really only refurbishing computers and removing viruses from computers. I will only get paid minimum wage because the guy is still growing his small business. He told me he would make up the pay in the form of experience I will gain. Hopefully I can learn a lot at this job and possibly in the future lead me to a better company. Anyone want to share their experiences with their first pc tech job?

I feel as the job I got was kind of luck, there wasn't even an ad for it anywhere I found this repair shop near me and I called them and asked if they hired entry-level techs. It seemed just by asking that is when I got my interview. Coreyb, I know what you mean I felt the same way for months, you will eventually find one. If there are any computer repair shops near you I would recommend you call some of them like I did and ask if they hire entry level techs and just send you resume over. If possible it is good to also bring your resume into the store in person so the employer know's how serious you are.

Congratz!

Few tips:
1. Be ethical ( you'd be surprised how much slime you'll find passing themselves as PC techs, and they only rip people off )
2. Don't lie or make up mumbo jumbo when explaining something technical.
3. Do not rush!! You will be dealing with sensitive information at times. So be careful and absolutely sure of what you are doing.
4. Proper tools obviously Hardware and Software wise.
5. Have a methodical approach in order to troubleshoot in a timely manner. Remember, slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Make the most out of the customer service part of this job - learn to be an IT person with customer service skills and you will have an advantage over a lot of the people that know just as much (or more) than you, but can't talk to users without copping an attitude and **** someone off.

Thanks for all the great comments guys. It will only be me and the owner of the shop working as he has nobody else working for him. He is still a small business but his company is growing. I wont be dealing with customers that much at all until he feels im comfortable. I will basically just be in the back room refurbishing computer's, getting any viruses off of them. His company is basically where he buys used computers, fixes them up and sells them for reasonable prices. Hopefully it will still get my foot in the door and possibly lead to a bigger and better job in a year or so.

I used to do that same exact job for 6 years. Greatest thing I learned is to stay organized and always....always...always....be ethical. People pay for quality work, and word of mouth is key in that kind of business so make sure you build your reputation and don't do half-a$$ work, it will cost you in the long run. Well the job I got is seasonal so I will only be working probably through December unless somehow he decides to keep me. I am worried that since its a seasonal position that it wont look as good on a resume. Do you guys feel the same way or do you think it would still look really good on my resume?

Some experience is better than none. Some may say no, but if you're trying to get your foot in the door, like I am, then I would add it to my resume.

It's easy enough to explain if you do get asked about it.

As stated above, this is a great opportunity to not only pick up on technical skills but also customer service. Both go a long way but the two combined will bring you further. Work on excellent written, verbal, and physical communication. Learn how to give a good firm handshake. Look people in the eye when you talk to them. Do your best to not meet but exceed customer expectation. This is how you do business, and this is how you move up in the business world.

Definitely keep it on your resume - You could even indicate that it was a seasonal position to explain why it was brief.

Congrats. I know you mentioned entry level but did you have any experience or degree/certs before landing this gig?

I have Comptia's A+ and Network+ plus like 8 months interning with my father at his work because my dads an IT manager. I am hoping that eventually after I am done with this seasonal entry-level gig it will really help me land a better entry-level position.

Your on a good path seeing how your father is an IT manager. Try networking with his peers, attend seminars, etc. I started off as a coop student with 3 major companies and this has put me at an advantage among my peers.

What certs are you considering next?

Take the advice given to heart because it will serve you well. Contract employment is a part of the IT business. So it won't look bad on your resume at all and it's easy enough to explain.

Congrats on the job. Even put down your internship with your dads company as it's still work experience.

Most jobs available aren't listed. I got my last job by emailing the company I worked for a copy of my resume and asking if they were hiring. So don't rely on the job boards and newspapers to find a job. Networking with others is a good way to get a job especially in this business.
