Hello Everyone this is my first time posting, first and foremost I would like to say Congrats to all that have passed and all that have the desire and ambition to take the Comptia Security + It definitely is a field that has more demand than supply, meaning higher salaries and job security.

I completed my A+ in 2003 (Landed several IT positions as a hardware technician shortly thereafter) and currently studying for my S+ One book I am studying from is exam cram SY0-301 third edition. I also bought a security plus simulator from e-bay which basically simulates the exam, however I don't if the sim is good preparation material, has anyone ever bought one of these things? I plan to take the Sec+ before 2012 or before the world ends whichever comes first. I also heard the CBT Nugget videos are a good. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Danny

An exam simulator can be very helpful, yes. Which one did you purchase?

I think 2012 comes first - but who knows? Maybe we are all in Purgatory! Good luck on the Sec+, either way! icon_thumright.gif

Thanks for your replies guys, I appreciate it. I will check out Prof. Messer. and for the sim I purchased the SY0-301 updated version which came with 293 questions and answers or so, pdf and sim. The previous SY0-301 prior to the updated version had about 500+ Q and A's. But I am using both the SIM, CBT, and Books, whatever I can get my hands on to study, $276 is a lot of money on the line for me so I definitely feel like I have one shot.

I used CompTIA Security+: Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-301 Study Guide: Darril Gibson: 9781463762360: Amazon.com: Books

I'm glad I did: 1) The author visits this forum. 2) The Book is outstanding. Going to Security+ before studying CCNA:Security was the most awesome thing I could've done. Say what you want about the test, the material is aplenty and it's definitely worthwhile to understand that book's topics. I bash things that I don't like, and recommend what I like.

CBT's Security+ is... meh. They may have redone it, but it was originally tailored for the old exam and then there were addems afterwards.

Women in uniforms, I like. See. I like people, too!

@danny069, welcome to the forums. I like Roguetadhg's recommendation but I'm a little biased. (@Roguetadhg, thanks for the kind words.)

When using practice test questions, it's important to use questions that include explanations. Some practice test questions that only give the answer without explanations have known to be wrong and people that memorize them end up missing questions without ever knowing why. Ideally, you should be able to look at any practice test question and know why the correct answer is correct and why the incorrect answers are incorrect. This way, no matter how CompTIA words the questions you'll be able to answer it correctly.

Good luck and feel free to post any questions here.

Anyone planning to move forward in the InfoSec field should get the Sec+ as a starting point, its a good exam to break into the material.

Thanks fr the reply Paperlantern ... The thing s being in testing field and moving into diff field such as info sec , i feel work exp matters .. So if at all i take sec+ exam and move forward in it , what are the chances to get into the Info sec field , since i feel i would have just made the certifications with no work exp in that field .. I have been thinking in this point of view for sometime , which has made me to hold back my preparations fr the sec+ .
