VLAN Names

When creating the same VLAN, e.g VLAN 150, across a load of switches, does the name have to match across the switches, or is this just a descriptor on the switches to help identify what the VLAN is?

Thanks

No they do not have to be the same. The name is not communicated in the 802.1q header, just a numerical value.

depends.. what mode you set on the switch if your using VTP on a switch set as a server it will push the VLAN names out to the other switch clients and servers as long as they are set in same domain. If you set the switch in transparent mode it will not send out VTP updates with VLAN names.

hope i'm telling you right because i'm just now studying ICND 2 and this is one of the topics. I'm actually going to be labbing this stuff this week...

    Thanks,

All switches are Transparent mode, no VTP being used.

in this case is no necessary to be the same name but it helps a lot to troubleshoot, of course, using vtp the same name or a vlan will be propagated through the entire vtp domain
