Devilry Member Posts: 668That sounds almost identical to a guy hired a few months back at my job. The guy evidently kept up and did great on a phone only interview with our top DBA, and when he showed up he was asking me how to access and use outlook.. couldn't figure out a USB wireless mouse. The guy couldn't figure out anything on a PC at all; let alone his job. This guy could barely even speak English.
Long story short, he only made it 4 weeks before being escorted out. I think people almost rose in applause. Defiantly gong to cause a lot of discrimination in the workplace for that culture. -
VAHokie56 Member Posts: 783You gotta give the guy some credit though... it takes some mighty big cojones to actually show up and try to pull that off. Wow, this is pretty mind boggling though. Can you say what the size of your company is VAH? I could see this maybe working at a huge company where he could just get lost in the sea of people.
Its a large manufacturing company...

my team did the phone interview and recommended a on-site "meet and greet" but because the higher pay grade fokes decided we needed someone asap they just hired him...ya I blame them as well.ιlι..ιlι.

petedude Member Posts: 1,510I seem to remember that during the dot-com boom a lot of companies were hiring over the phone, or flying people across country for in-person meetings on the basis of a brief phone interview. It's one of those things that was OK for a brief period, until people started to abuse the process. I guess some folks are still trying to slip in through those kinds of cracks.Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

I don't know why I was so floored at first. Being an artist for the last 12years, people steal others art works and show them in their portfolio has been going on forever. That still amazes me though that people actually do it.

WiseWun Member Posts: 285I hate that. Happened to me a couple times, but we were able to catch them. We've since switched to Skype.
The other one is when people show up to an interview with an interpreter, that drives me crazy.
Interpreter? looooooooooool, I'm crying with laughter. So what would happen if he's given the job, is the interpreter going to be around? Man this is hilarious.
A few years ago right after I graduated, an IT company in the US found my resume online and contacted me for a phone interview. The company trains you on products that are on-demand and sends you off to other companies for different projects. At that time, SSO was hot in the market so I got trained on WebSphere/WebLogic, Sun LDAP, and Tivoli.
After I passed the technical interview, they sent me the offer letter and TN Visa paperwork. The company pays for travel costs, housing (shared but own room , grocery (600+ every week, gained a few pounds!) certification exams, and all that other good stuff. Up until this point, I was really excited, I always wanted to work south of the border plus me being a recent graduate, it was the perfect opportunity.
Once you complete the training, the company preps you for the client interview over the phone. I'm a quick learner but becoming a SME for all these products in a month and falsifying my resume and putting Senior Consultant didn't make sense not to mention it was very unethical. The trainer even offered to do the phone interview and for the certs, they gave us brain-**** to study.
I also found out the contracts they were getting was on average 120K, they offered me 50K x 1.5 each year. My roommates are all foreigners and not too technical. I asked one of the company staff about hiring local US employees and he said it doesn't work well. He further explained once they bring a local employee on-board, their either not driven, demand more, or quit which is a waste of time. But recruiting foreigners is easy, the pay is better then what their use to and if they don't comply, the company cancels their Visa. I refused to write the exams and sit in for phone interviews, told the boss I'm not going to play ball.
These types of companies target desperate victims, they know how to work the system and should be brought to justice. They were indirect violation of US immigration laws by sending lower-level unskilled workers to customer sites. I'm glad I experienced this at an earlier stage of my career. W Stewart Member Posts: 794 ■■■■□□□□□□Wow that's hilarious. What did he think was going to happen on the first day? I do wonder how much the other guy got paid and why he didn't just apply for the job himself unless he was already employed. Some people lie on their resume but having someone else do your interview? That takes it to another level.

W Stewart Member Posts: 794 ■■■■□□□□□□Hard to say how much they get away with. I left the guy alone in our lab to try and configure some simple L2 connections to a fake upstream switch (I set a fake lab up to confirm our suspicious of skill level ) and when I came back I looked at his PC and he had a Webex open with someone. So I imagine maybe that's how they try and get away with it,have someone remote in and do the work maybe even for a small fee?. When I called him out on the webex he just closed it and ignored my question...real weird.
Wow this just keeps getting funnier and funnier. -
W Stewart Member Posts: 794 ■■■■□□□□□□What doesn't make sense is why the guy doing the webex sessions wouldn't just apply for the job himself. They couldn't possibly be paying the guy more money than they expect to get from your company so he's probably not even being properly compensated for his time unless these guys are just stupid and are losing money. Maybe he was in a different location but it sounds like the company may even be willing to pay for relocation.

That sounds like a brilliant idea. I wish I could do something like that. -
