Studying at the Gym

RoguetadhgRoguetadhg Member Posts: 2,489 ■■■■■■■■□□
So recently I've decided to actually use my gym membership.

I took my book with me. It's a bit awkward. Actually, writing is next to impossible:

Does anyone else study at the gym? If so, how do you have to do it?

I only listen to music, I really don't think I could concentrate on studying.

If I'm going to the gym, I would prefer to free my mind for a little while. I thinks it's bad for the brain to be constantly trying to jam information into it. That being said, if I wanted to learn I would use podcasts.

I would "study" the same way I do when driving: listen to audio ripped from videos.

I didn't finish reading the sentence when I thought "You read while you drive? That's awesome!"

I don't study per se in the gym. But I do like to watch Defcon presentations and similar on youtube on my tablet when I am on the elliptical.

Im trying to loose the fat by going cardio (hour of walking, can't run thanks to knees), first before going to strength training. I get enough of that while lifting crt monitors :)

That takes multitasking to a whole new level! There are just some places you're not going to be able to study, unless it's N audio book or something like that.

i may listen to mp3 or podcasts, but usually if i'm trying to study to hard at the gym i'm wasting my time at the gym.

It's impossible for me to study at the gym. In fact, I hate it when people talk to me while I'm lifting. Some of my workouts require too much focus in order to just complete the exercise.

For example, deadlifts. There's way too many things that go on during this lift that you can really screw yourself up if your mind is on something else instead of the task at hand.

I say it's pretty dangerous if you're lifting weights and you're not fully concentrating on what you're doing.

Ya no idea who you could even do it while lifting...I am constantly moving in between sets shacking loose or stretching and obviously you cannot studying in the middle of a rep!

I'm trying to hit the gym more, and with how I travel it largely depends on if the hotel I'm staying at has one or not. Couldn't see myself studying there. Tend to do that while sitting in my hotel room between dinner and going to sleep. When I'm at home, I have a recumbent bike, and will usually watch an hour long show on Netflix while I work-out on it.

Fat loss is all about math. Exercise is important, but diet is more important. I managed to lose a total of 11lbs over the last month. Started at 225, heaviest I've ever been... at 6' tall I thought I was just a little overweight. Until I started researching and discovered I would actually be considered obese. icon_sad.gif Started trying "Alli" at the recommendation of a friend, didn't change anything else, kept my eating and exercise habits exactly the same, and only lost 7 of those lbs. Last week I tried something new, limited myself to 1200 calories per day, except for 1 day where I had a "****" dinner of Sushi and no idea how many calories consumed. Only found time/motivation to work out once, and that was about 30 minutes of cardio. Lost 4lbs in 5 days.

The biggest part of the calorie reduction was cutting out pop, something I've done before. I realized I'd been drinking around 1000 calories a day in pop over the last few months. Switched back to nothing but water. Also cut out mayo and other high fat high calorie condiments. Surprisingly not missing them as much as I thought I would. Couldn't bring myself to give up cheese though, so just using a bit more portion control in that area. ;)

Its tough, especially since I travel 75% of the time, which means I'm eating out for every meal at least 4 days a week (which sucks, because I love to cook, and I usually cook very healthy meals at home). I love to try new foods and find the best local restaurant (avoiding chains), but I realized I don't have to do that for every meal. I now do that for 1 meal out of the week, and have been doing low fat/low cal subs at Subway for lunch and dinner the rest of the week.

Find something that works for you, and good luck. ;)

Mayo is not an option on a sandwhich. I've been using dijon mustard, instead though.

I eat for the past 2 weeks:
PBnJ sandwhich - whole grain or whole wheat sara lee. Two boiled eggs. Orange Juice.
Lunch: Just a sandwhich of meat and cheese.

I do get about 3 cups of earl grey tea w/ agave nectar and %1 milk.

and regarding the question - I once thought of this option myself but it really isn't comfortable + I think that you should consider gym workout time as a "certificates timeout", it's only for your own good.

I could read while on the treadmill but that's about it. Perhaps do review work instead of new material so you don't have to worry about taking notes?
  • DoubleNNsDoubleNNs Member Posts: 2,015 ■■■■■□□□□□
I used to do route memorization between sets. I'd either have study apps (flashcards, mock tests) on my phone or create tables/flashcards and bring them w/ me to the gym.

You're doing burst rounds of studying while really focusing most of your attention to the lift session at hand. So bringing an actual book and actually trying to write notes isn't the best thing. Not to mention is is hard to write seconds after exhausting your muscles.

If doing cardio, the best method would probably be a type of audio study method. It's hard to read while moving around, and often you use your arms while doing the cardio (so can't hold onto what you're reading.)

When memorizing ports for Net+ or command-line tools, I'd leave all that memorization for the gym or work, and focused on learning all the concepts and why's during my actual study time.

The reviewing makes sense instead of new material. I'll keep that in mind.

I tried studying new material while 'running' on the elliptical.. It didn't work out well.

I've had some success reviewing material I have already covered via flash cards, though.

There's no way I could study at the gym. That's my time for BEAST MODE icon_cool.gif. I even find it hard to listen to books/podcast while I'm driving, it takes my concentration off the road .

Wow! Admirable that you're trying to make this work, but I can't help but think that both your workout and your studying are.. well, not as effective as you'd want. A good scenario is to find material you can find on audio and listen to that as you work out, but ultimately, your first priority should be on your health.
