Well, let's see here. Since last years' plans were a wash, I'm hoping to pick some of them up. The only cert I earned in 2012 was ITIL Foundation (today, as a matter of fact,) and a lot of other things just fell to the wayside due to a dead-end job that never went anywhere and a busy schedule otherwise. My schedule will be busy next year as well, between classes and work, but stable and I'll have the money to take exams again. So, for 2013:
    -
    • MCSA: Windows Server 2008
      • Taking 70-648 exam sometime in the next month or so
      • 70-646 at some point not too long after that
    • VCP 5 (Enrolled in the class at my community college, so I'll probably be taking this in the summer)
    • MCSA: Windows Server 2012
      • Hoping to take the upgrade exam, 70-417, before summer
    • JNCIA, since my work now uses primarily Juniper routers, but everything else is still Cisco
    • And, if there's time towards the end of the year, I'd like to get back on track with Cisco and go for the CCNP again. We'll see if work and school leave time for it
    -
Let's see if this year is a bit more productive than last year, shall we? icon_lol.gif

    Free Microsoft Training: Microsoft Learn
Free PowerShell Resources: Top PowerShell Blogs
Free DevOps/Azure Resources: Visual Studio Dev Essentials

Let it never be said that I didn't do the very least I could do.

@ PSO SA would be a huge win even without CCENT IMO

@ Kermit NA would be huge. What Sharepoint certification were you thinkinig about? Administration or the user one from MOS?

probably the MOS one. I would never touch the backend of sharepoint.

I took the perspective to show the planning for the future, but also to see what really happened, in the past. I don't want to give a perspective that I'm a hot-shot that never fails, LOL. So, I'm hoping that this post helps someone else.

I think it's worthwhile to show FAILURE in this, and to remember that the Past is not ever as rosy as it may have appeared. FAILURE doesn't make me quit. It only makes me try harder. I strongly believe that success is about commitment. Also, I'm convinced that entertainment can be evil -- if unchecked. Getting rid of my T.V. helped a lot, so I included it in here, for perspective.

    2013 Certification Plans (God willing)
    Month - Exam
01 - Complete the WGU MSISA Program
    02 - SWITCH
    03 - TSHOOT
    04 - R&S Written
    09 - ???

    2012 Accomplished:
    Month - Exam
02 - Contract - Lead Network Security Administrator
    05 - ROUTE
    05 - Contract - Information Assurance Engineer
    07 - C|HFI (WGU)
    09 - G2700 (WGU)

    2011 Accomplished:
    Month - Exam
01 - Security+ (was required for a Gov contract job offer. I recall getting the offer on Friday evening, getting the book from Barnes and Noble (when their store here was open that Friday night, glossed over the material on Saturday, deciding to schedule it for Monday, actually studied it on Sunday, and taking the Security+ on Monday, MLK day -- it was a work day for us, but traffic was very light that day)
01 - Cisco [Support Center] Interview -- Bombed the interview ... apparently the recruiter set me up for failure, by making my resume look like I was a networking guru [I had stuff listed in order of hiearchy, but he stripped out all the Windows Server/Citrix/VMware stuff, left a few Cisco bullets, and they thought I'd been doing only Cisco for 10 years, [[I had the Cisco as a lower-ranked skill, not a higher-ranked skill, and I was trying to sell me as someone experienced in other things who was transitioning] ... the recruiter sold me as a guru, and I was interviewed as if I was a guru -- epic fail.
02 - Contract - Systems Integrator (Yes, solely to get the clearance.)
03 - CISSP [taken] -- had to drive to Nebraska over a weekend for it. After taking the contract job, realized that I needed to do something like this to get ahead in the contracts, as far as wages, so I basically started studying for this as soon as I was at the contract job.
03 - Cisco [Associates Program] -- Failed to get selected for their program, which actually inspired me to try harder, as I only blamed myself for not being prepared enough. Had to fly to RTP for this debacle.
    05 - CISSP [confirmed]
    05 - CCNA
    06 - CCNA:Security
    06 - Contract - Network Security Engineer
08 - Started the WGU MSIA Program
    12 - C|EH (WGU)

    2010 Accomplished:
    Month - Exam
06 - Removed my TV, cancelled cable television
10 - Completed the B.S. in Information Systems
    Currently Working: CCIE R&S

I completed a bunch of certs in 2012, 2 MCSEs, VCP5, and MCSA2012, I am done for the time being. The only thing I am working on now its my Masters degree from George Mason University. I am planning on getting PADI certified when the semester is over.

Well I got A+ and Network+ 6 or 7 years ago, and have been in misc IT jobs for about 10 years, but im stuck where I am and need to get into "higher career mode". Been refreshing the last month or so and planning on taking CCENT in about 2 weeks.

The rest of 2013 is looking to be: CCNA, MCSA (server 2k8 or 2k12, maybe both), then maybe bounce back to CCNP
    2013 goals (old)
    CCENT (passed) | CCNA | JNCIA-Junos | CCNA:Security | WGU Enrollment

2013 goals (new job means new focus)
CCENT (passed) | VCP5-DV (class 1st week of april, cert by end of april) | WGU Enrollment | CCNA | MCSA:Server2k8

Good luck to you $5Couch, what are the jobs like working out there for the casinos?

Can't speak beyond entry level stuff, but those at least aren't anything special. Your typical Helpdesk / level 1 tech pay ($12-15/hr).

The upside (at least to me), since they are such big organizations, limited job scope and lots of vertical (better than a small company where one man covers everything under the sun)
    2013 goals (old)
    CCENT (passed) | CCNA | JNCIA-Junos | CCNA:Security | WGU Enrollment

2013 goals (new job means new focus)

    2013 goals

    PMP
    MBA (3 courses left)

If I can achieve this I will be so pumped.

    @ Kermit

Knowing how to use SharePoint is huge. So many people don't even know how to perform simple task within the application. I think it would be awesome if you had a chance to lab SharePoint and really become a power user.

    Just my two cents

As my CCNA is (again) up for recertification I will take a shot at CCNP.

I would also like to take a first step towards RHCA but the exams are damn expensive...

    CCNP Route by Feb 21st
    CCNP Switch by June-July time
    TSHOOT immediately after

Start studying IE Written materials after NP obtained.

I really want to push myself this year as far as my Cisco studies go. I would absolutely love to IE written completed by the end of the year but not real sure if that is doable quite yet.
    Currently Studying: IE Stuff...kinda...for now...
My ultimate career goal: To climb to the top of the computer network industry food chain.
