Using a switch on home network with no router?

I know this is an odd question, but I know I can get an answer here. I have a Cisco 3500XL that I want to use for my home network, but I want to move my wireless router that currently serves that purpose. I have a fiber connection at home that terminates outside into regular Cat 5e cable. I know the switch can be set up to act as a DHCP client, and the configuration guide shows how it's done, but what confuses me is it says I should know the IP address/default gateway/subnet mask of the client. Since that's supplied through DHCP, I wonder how the switch would react if it were plugged right into the outside line connection? Would it generate a DHCP setup on that port through autoconfiguration? Would it refuse the port assignments generated?
