Relocating

Hi guys,

Have any of you sucessfully relocated for a job and kept it under wraps with a current employer? After the end of the year here, I'm just plain burnt, I was planning to finish school before moving on but I'm ready to move on now. I have one interview thats about three hours away and I made an excuse to get the day off, but, if there are additional follow up interviews (as there usually are these days), or other places I've applied start calling? Do I explain the situation and ask for a phone/video interview when speaking with the HR person? Or should I just let my current employer know I am looking?
I am a little worried about how letting my current employer know could affect me negatively, but at the same time, I figure the worst case for me is that I let them know but refuse to resign until I find something. In which case they would have to let me go and I could get umemployement while I look, however, that could make it just as hard to find a job if not harder. So???? It's defintely a quandry....

Never, ever, ever let your current employer know that you are looking for another job. In fact, don't let your current employer know about anything until you have a signed letter in hand.

+100 to what Aldur said, NEVER tell ANYONE at your current employment that you are looking for a new role. If you tell one person, word will quickly get out and your manager will soon be tapping on your shoulder. In addition, NEVER resign one from one job if you dont have a SIGNED offer letter and a confirmed start date.

You are going to have come up with one excuse or another each time you need to go to an interview. Dont interview at places that are far off if you are going to have difficulties getting there.

You may want to be careful with calling in too many times. Just don't look good. It might be best to make arrangements to use personal time. This is not paid to you when you quit. ONLy Vacation is paid to you.

Good luck on your new adventure... I'm gonna try to finish my first cert before relocating. HOpefully I will be done with in the 1st couple of months.

Yeah and maybe interview after you finish work for the day. What I did once was this, my shift was from 9am-5pm but there were other shifts that people worked on from 7am-3pm. I asked my manager to be put on that, he agreed without hesitation though he did ask me why - I replied that I wanted to finish early so I could get some extra study time (which was not wrong either!). That freed up 2 hours every day.

My current employer has known that I've been looking for work, and they support it, I've even got people lined up for them to call. (Not really a place that needs a resume handed in - More word of mouth). My main reasons though were that I am a contractor, and even though I'm on permanent hours at the location, when I want to buy a house, or have kids, it's going to be difficult, and I don't have sick pay, and I don't get holiday pay or super, I have to fund that all myself.

They have always said that I will give a good reference, and I continue to work my hardest, so they just know to expect one day I will give them a few weeks notice and be out the door. I have only pissed them off once when I left early one afternoon and it was final Year exams the next day.

It was only my manager that knew and that was it. The only reason he knew though was because I was a contractor, and he needs someone to step in within a week. He was quite happy with it as it meant he could set things up ready for the day I leave and he can put someone in.

However, If I was in a direct employment/permanent role, I would NOT tell anyone, including my manager, as it can cause massive implications.

I actually left my last position this way. Was interviewing at a spot around 11 hours away. I could not afford to fly, so it was all drive time. I set up a handful of interviews for the same Monday and took a vacation day in the guise of a long weekend. No one even questioned it. Good luck on the interviews!
