Labbing up SCVMM 2012

EssendonEssendon Member Posts: 4,546 ■■■■■■■■■■
Questions about SCVMM 2012 please folks. My lab setup:

- Physical server running Windows Server 2012. Hyper-v role enabled. This host is not in a domain.
- SCVMM 2012 running as a VM in the above host.
- iSCSI SAN running inside another VM in the above host.
- AD/DNS running on a VM running in the above host. This VM is the Domain Controller for my VM's inside of the physical host.

So,

- How, if at all, can I get SCVMM to manage the host it's on? The VM is on an internal virtual switch, so it can talk to the host (I can UNC to the host from within the VM after I supply credentials), but I cant add the darn host to SCVMM - it says cant find host or something similar. Does there need to be shared storage or something?

- Do Hyper-v hosts need to be part of the same domain as SCVMM? Surely there can be a trust that'll sort things out?

- Am I going to need a separate physical machine to play around with SCVMM? Maybe assign the SCVMM a external switch so it can talk to external hosts, but then how the heck am I going to get the domain trusts working (considering my current setup)?

I've got some of the other components of System Center 2012 going, with Orchestrator, SCOM, SCCM up and racing. I dont want to start from scratch, so please dont tell me I need to rebuild me lab! Man, nesting ESXi inside of ESXi was so darn easy, building my VCP/VCAP lab was a BREEEEEZE....!

How have you guys setup your lab? How are you managing your hosts and VM's? I can work things out fairly quickly, but this has me in for a spin...icon_twisted.gif

You tried to the member server through the Add Host wizard using the option for 'perimeter network? You must first add the agent on the host locally.

@ Bloogen, I'll give that a go when I get home from work in a few hours...

@cyberguypr, lol! One thing beats me about MS is why dont they include the prerequisites in the installation package. I was installing Orchestrator the other day and the darn thing needed .NET framework 4 first. Why cant they include it in the darn install? Just escapes me. I didnt have any Internet that day at home and that was it for the day!

Looks like you cannot manage a Windows Server 2012 host using plain SCVMM 2012, you need SCVMM 2012 SP1 (and WADK for Win 8.). I'll download it when I get to work today, darn slow Internet at home. Labbing up on Orchestrator for now.

Just saw this thread otherwise I would have posted that up earlier. We have been waiting for SP1 to hit RTM for awhile now here at work just for that reason. You also couldn't manage Server 2012 and Windows 8 clients in Config Man 2012 till SP1 either. Microsoft dropped the ball big time on the release of the System Center 2012 products not being compatible with Server 2012/ Win8. Hope the install goes well.

Awright folks, ran into more trouble with the installation. I downloaded and installed the WADK to my VM, but when I launch the setup for SCVMM SP1, it says it cannot install the VMM Management Server because the VM isnt running a supported operating system. The VM is 2008 R2 SP1 and it still doesnt effing install, damn you Microsoft, really damn you. Anyone know what I can do next, apart from trying it on a 2012 VM?

Nah, full Datacenter edition. I suspect it may be the SQL Express bit that got installed when I was deploying WADK to the VM...

Learning every Microsoft technology is darn struggle. I woke up at freaking 4am in the hope of being to able to install this POS and start labbing it up, and doesnt want to install. What a start to the day!

I've been slowly poking at it for a week. So far I have deployed Orchestrator, VMM, App Controller, Ops Manager, and Config Manager. 90% of the issues I hit were SQL related which I didn't feel like troubleshooting. I ended up installing a SQL 2008 R2 instance on each VM. Of course now the problem is that I'm running out of RAM.

Definitely one of the most convoluted things I've deployed lately.

Awright it installed on a 2012 VM with no issues. Dont know whether it was the OS or the SQL Express installation on the previous VM.
