How many hours a week do you work on average?

I know that 40 hours is full time but lets face it.

We as IT workers work way beyond that due to the nature of our demanding work.

So how many hours a week do you work on average?

Also do you get paid for over time or not?

My work is actulay very good, working week is 37.5 hours, which does not include lunch or breaks so added on that makes the standard 40 hour week. Boss is very good in that as far as he in concerned he company does not pay over time so any work out side those hours is up to us and is never pushed for. Indeed knowing the extra time I put in, i am often encouraged to take time back rather than work more..

having said that I generally put in about 3 to 4 hours a night out side of work on work related stuff. I would say I might do 11 to 12 hours a day, its hard to tell as from about 9pm to 2 am I am on my computer doing network stuff. Its always wok related as I base all my study around projects at work.

Average hours a week, 42, on week is 60, the other 24. I now work a "basic" helpdesk in which i get on average 3-5 calls in my 12 hour shift. And I'm going crazy here.

4 x 12 hour shifts a week, but this works out as 38 hour working week, over a year.

37.5 and usually finish within 10 minutes of home time, any significant overtime is claimed back in lieu. Including travelling time, work takes up 9 hours a day Monday to Friday.

My time card says 40. Company rules are 1 hour (unpaid) lunch, but as a contractor I work with the military. They take 1.5 hour lunches (at least this area) so we match. If I have to work over by a bit, I normally just take the time back on a slow day. If the government demands it, then they have to pay overtime (straight time, salaried). In general, with my current job, I only really have overtime during major military exercises, other than that it's pretty rare I get called in.

It depends on what my boss puts down for the next week. Our hours for part time workers can change from week to week. Usually I work about 17 or 18 hours a week when I'm put down for 16.

I work on average about 35 hours a week (I work at a university, the academic environment is laid back with a lot of time off)

@op - this is sort of an odd question. Why do you ask? In my experience, IT professionals do not work more or less than any other profession. It usually would depend largely on industry, company culture, location, etc.

I agree with this. But, I'll bite. 40hrs a week.

I'm salary, with no OT pay. So, if there's ever a time in which I have to work extra, I get that time back and since we get paid monthly, I have the entire month to even out the differences. This relates to exactly with what paul78 says "company culture." The culture where I am now is one in which management treats the relationship as a 1 way street. So, I don't do anything beyond what they are paying me to do. I've worked at places that the culture was a 2 way street and I would regularly work past 40hrs and it wasn't a concern that I wasn't technically getting paid for those hours.

Rarely do I go over 35 hours these days.

8 hour days. I guess you can minus an hour off each day for lunch too. So 35 hours a week

Contractor on salary (no OT) so I only work over 40 billable if it's an issue being mitigated after hours, which I would do regardless because it's my job. But, all sides of mgmt are cool with amending overages so often we can come in a little late/leave a little early to offset a longer day in the 2 week billing period, or reclaim PTO in certain situations.

40 hours a week salaried, anything over (very rare) is given back as time off.

45+ every week. Only paid for 40 (salary). None of it is really "given back", but if I want to leave a half hour early one day or come in a few minutes late, no big deal.

Well its because in the system admin field sometimes things go down and it needs to come back up before you can go home.

In my role on average (I am new only being here 3 months) I have done on average 47 hours a week this includes travel etc.

I have also done some work in the weekend too.

I do not get paid over time and no I cannot take off those hours that I did overtime for when the work is low (Never is low there is always something to do)

This is not a good thing for me and this is the way my manager is running the company.

In the end its the company loss when the employee is less productive and leaves the company before the 1 year mark.

Some people do not understand.

Guys do you think I should quit?

I am on a salary of 56k a year in my area the average salary is 42k.

I really do not know what to do, I learn alot on the plus hand and people look up to me but it is hard being the go to person, when you are treated like ****?

This new job is to be determined. I am hoping 40 - 45 but I have a feeling this is going to be a 50 - 60.

37.5 hourly but I do put in the extra time to make it 40 hours. Company does not mind the OT work

I work at a school so, no overtime, 37 hour week (except when the school closed when we usually finish half an hour early each day). I swim 4-5 times a week in my lunch and get meals provided. Money isn't great but the perks make up for it.

Hourly worker here...40 hours a week...no OT...I am technically the first phone call they make for an after-hours issue but I can decide right there if I need to address it remotely, hand it off to our corporate IT folks or make them wait until the next business day. I also moonlight as a bouncer for about 20 hours a week. lol.

I can take those hours off if they're in the same pay period but doing so would most likely mean that I'd just have that much more to do during the next.

An extra ~10% isn't really a big deal to me.
