Comper Tech or Help Desk

I have an opportunity to get a job right now part time as a computer tech at a local store. The thing is my goal is to be a Network Admin. Should I jump on this or hold out for a help desk spot. Would hate to be offered a position after I already started working there.

Any job is better than no job. I'd take the job if you need the money and at least it is something to put on the resume. You can always put in your notice if you find something better.

Even a computer tech position will contribute to skills necessary as a network admin. Hands-on experience can be very beneficial. And who knows, the computer tech position might be a stepping stone to a help desk role!

Computer tech is lower than help desk in the food chain? I always thought Help Desk was level 1 support and Tech was level 2 support (the guys who actually go out do the work).

I say take the job! Unless it is like a Office Max or something like that...

I'm with Whiteout, everywhere I have worked had Help Desk L1 and Tech / Analyst L2. I am also tempted to agree with Whiteout's second opinion as well. If you are already in IT for a company supporting that company (Vs. IT for the public) then I would stick with what you have. Supporting a corporation looks better on a resume than supporting the general public. At least that is my opinion, anyway.

Will the pay/hours be more than your current position at geeksquad? I can only assume that the experience will be equal or better but either way neither of the positions will be network related. How long have you been at geeksquad? Having another job on your resume besides geeksquad will at least make your resume look a little better. but if you're leaving for a job that's not much of a pay raise and then you come across a great entry level networking gig a month afterwards then it may look bad leaving two jobs in a row so soon. I wouldn't take the other job unless it's a considerable pay increase seeing as it won't take you in the direction that you want to go and you are already currently employed.

I would also suggest looking for a job with an ISP or with a small business that will have you supporting everything and learn as much as you can about networking prior to getting your first networking gig. Most jobs want to see that you at least have a basic understanding to grow off of. They're willing to train but they're usually not going to teach you from the ground up.

Take the job. Work on your networking knowledge, keep applying, leave when you get a job in a networking role. I know people are trained to feel bad about these sort of things, but why? They will fire you on the spot if you're no longer in their best interest, you leaving is no different. This is business.

He described it as a part time computer tech at a local store so it seems as if Help Desk will be a step up from his current position.

It will be more hands on than geeksquad and the pay will be about the same. I would love to have both jobs and stack the experience. Hmmmm maybe. What is the path most travel to become network admin and beyond?
