WGU Students: Staying Motivated With Classes Unrelated To Your Field

How do you guys do it? I find much joy devouring Cisco Press books, CCIE blogs, networking white papers, etc. I end up reading a whole Cisco Press book within the course of a week sometimes! I just can't get enthused about Java programing or even configuring Windows 7.

Yeah it sucks. Just gotta power through and realize that the reason for a BS is to make you a well rounded job applicant. It also shows that you have the ability to keep on track even though the task at hand may not be your primary job role or what you are most interested in. Having that degree is just a mandatory check box to some employers.

That is exactly what I'm struggling with right now. I'm taking a JavaScript class and I just can't get into it. I barely passed the web design class. I realize that I need to just push through it but it is hard.

Word. That's the only reason I'm tourturing myself through finishing this degree up. I thought could power through like you, but man, the demands of work, family, and my own certification goals, it's a tough nugget to bite.

Same boat as you guys. 1st stuggle was the TPV1 - Project+ and working on the Web Design MTA now. Feels great when you finish though.

Yeah, some courses are more fun than others. JavaScript and java are hard for me, mainly because they just don't interest me. It helps to break up the boring classes into small study sessions throughout the day.

I treated those classes like pulling off band-aids...Fast as possible to ease the pain...

That Project+ was the worst. I don't really like programming, but studying about project management is more painful than oral surgery. I just sat down with the Sybex book and made myself read 50 to 100 pages a day at my coffee shop. Knocked it out in about 10 days.

Honestly, part of any degree is proving that you can stomach learning something complicated you completely don't care about through discipline and sheer force of will. Think of new study methodologies or ways you can learn the material faster if you want to try to generate some interest. Even when you study something in your preferred field, you're going to have to learn about a specific technology you won't likely use on the job (RIPv2, Private Vlans, 802.1x, VSS, etc). Learning how to endure studying garbage is a useful skill to have.

+1 to this. It helps demonstrate you can learn things that are outside the immediate scope of your interests.
