thisisalex02
How you all doin ? A friend recently gave me a 3600 and a 1600. Are these of any use to me for studying towards ccna. im still gonna get a couple of 2600 series routers and a 1924 switch. Or am i better off buying some 2500 series routers. Thanks for everyones input.

very nice, what modules are installed in them? If you have serial interface cards in there you should be set. 2600's would be nice additions and would allow you to keep going towards CCNP from what I have heard, but 2501's work great for CCNA and are much cheaper. Also a major consideration would be the IOS levels.
Only thing I would stear from is that 1924, you wont get much use out of it. Go with a 2900 series enterprise, 2924M-XL-EN's are going for around 140 USD on ebay right now, that gets you into a switch that uses later IOS, and fast ethernet ports,or if you really want to be on the platform that the CCNA tests on, go with the 2950 catalyst.

ok well its a 3640 and he also gave me a catalyst 5000. So all in all he gave me a 3640 (serial interfaces) a 1601 and a catalyst 5000. I still plan to get two 2600 series routers and a 2900 series switch. How does all this sound for a home lab. Currently studying for ccna. Thanks

sounds like a great hook up..... free is good.. 3640, cat 5000 and a 1600.. thats great for a ccna lab and if u add a couple of routers good for ccnp and other cisco certs
need a friend to give me some good stuff i had to pay for all of mine

You should be good on routing since that 3640 has a serial WIC and the 1601 has a serial port already. What modules are in the cat 5000? Stock is none, just a cabinet.
IOS levels will be of concern for you as well. Anything above 12.1 will be fine for CCNA.

And this is when the fun starts. On the 3640... are there any modules included with it. A 3640 has 4 slots... are there any slots where you can plug a console cable in and what connections does it have?
The 1601 is a standard small router and it is good for its serial interface. Not useful in a full working environment but usefull for a home network. Plus, you can learn how to connect your DSL/ Cable to the router and you can have your true little home network.
Cat 5000... big box but it is important what modules are there. This is normally a production switch. Does it have a supervisor module with a switching module? The sup module will say sup XXXX (XXXX=what type it is) and the switching module will have rj-45 ports with it.
You can find the IOS levels by plugging it in and using a console cable to see what version it is. If you dont know how to do that then you can look it up via website or start reading a book and follow along with the book with your routers. Much more fun that way.
For VPN, in case you are going the voice/ security route... your 3640 with the right module will be the perfect deal for you.
