I got an email.

I got a email from a recruiter who says that they have seen my resume on Monster, and was interested in me and asked for an updated version of my resume, and phone number and time they can reach me. but thing is I seem a little under qualified for the job. I have my A+, and Network+ and some college.

This is there requirements:

Software G****** & ********, Inc., (***), is searching for a Jr. Production Support Analyst for a contract assignment with one of our premier financial industry clients in Chicago, Illinois.
Responsibilities:
Provide first level support for internal clients.

Work closely with users, answering their queries and raising development requests as they are presented.

Monitoring & supporting batches and downstream feeds.

Escalation and timely resolution of production issues.

Liaise between users and technology teams.

Analysis around new requirements or improvements to the current system.

Develop and Maintain documentation.

Required Skills:
Bachelors degree in Computer Sciences, Information Systems, or related field.

Support and problem diagnosis skills - Strong desire to jump in and investigate issues, resolve problems, and communicate status.

Ability to deal with a high pressure environment.

Personable and excellent communicator. Candidate will be dealing directly with business users and development teams.

Basic tech skills - MS Office, SQL, Excel, VBA, UNIX

UNIX admin and/or scripting experience desired

SQL debugging Stored Procedures experience desired

Strong MS excel skills

Python or Perl background a plus

Financial background preferred.

I guess it depends on what you know among all this above listed requirements but one thing I would chose to live with is I am never under qualified for anything. 80% says they must have seen a bunch of other C.V's before they made contact with you. They must have seen something or maybe felt something about you that you might not even know about. Why not just send them your updated C.V.. and No, don't claim to know what you don't know. Who knows, they may even offer trainings... you never know until you try.

Thank you that gave me a confidence boost, and i sent them my updated C.V, and going to study up on SQL, VBA and UNIX. Just so i dont go in there clueless about those subject in case of an interview

Recruiters get paid to recruit. They send out emails to countless numbers of people and find one that fits. Don't feel bad if you don't hear back from the one you sent your CV to. With your certs/education I would be looking for a lower level help desk position that focuses on basic PC/printer/network troubleshooting. Try checking out your local Craigslist under the technical support section. Also, keep in mind that a most postings that say "Required Skills" will not budge on certain topics, such as having a Bachelors degree or equivalent experience. It never hurts to try, but most of these companies will disregard your CV instantly if you don't have the necessary skills/requirements. Good luck, I'm sure you will find something that fits!

You will get this stuff all the time once you start getting your resume out there. Knowing which ones are legit and which ones aren't usually involves comparing the posting to your resume and seeing why it got flagged. For example, I work with Check Point firewalls a lot at work but wouldn't consider myself an expert. Yet I get a barrage of e-mails every week for Check Point expert positions needing to be filled all around the world, and the term Check Point is the only thing in common with my resume. Of course, they're all prefaced with "I saw your resume on Dice/Monster/etc. and thought you'd be a perfect fit". In my experience if it says "please review these requirements and submit a copy of your current resume if qualified" it really means "I have not read your resume but it matched enough keywords in our search for our system to e-mail you".

That's not to say you shouldn't apply or that they'll always just be keyword matches that don't apply to you, though.

It's always good to know unix or linux but the learning curve is pretty big and your probably won't be able to learn enough to sound like you know what you're talking about in an interview without having used it for at least a couple of months. Studying up on it will allow you to learn just enough to sound clueless in an interview with somebody who actually knows unix. From the looks of the description, you'd probably have to learn how to write scripts in bash and perl or python which is also going to require some decent knowledge of coding as well. You could probably learn enough about SQL in a day and I've never dived into VBA too much but if that's the same as visual basic, it's pretty straight forward and gui oriented so it shouldn't be too difficult to learn. It seems to me like recruiters are only worth dealing with once you get into a certain salary range but not really at the entry level.
