Help with frame relay
kadshah
I'm having a hard time understanding FR. I don't have a lab environment to run the excerise on Todd's book. I've read his explanation I sort of get it but again no hands-on. Is this a chapter that I could just memorize the commands after understanding the concept and be able to wing this portion of the exam? Any suggestions? How many questions can I expect on the CCNA regarding...

...frame relay?

Im not the type who can memorize the commands, I have to see them in action. Some have. not me.
you can rent some labtime at the Bryant Advantage for 10 bucks a day, or you can pony up 150-250 for a simulator.

i have RouterSim network visualizer 4.1 for some reason i thought this simulator didn't support frame-relay let me check.
thanks
kadshah
it does.
i should have checked before posting sorry.
thanks again

How is Routersim? I am using Boson Netsim when I dont have access to my lab, its not bad but there are some bugs with OSPF and EIGRP.
Does Routersim have debug support for OSPF and EIGRP?
johnnynodough
Yay! More bugs with Boson Netsim. ISDN configuration, if you type in a dialer list statement wrong, it will take and wont give an invalid command error, puts it in the running config in, and wont let you negate it. You have to reload the router and start from scratch
kadshah
give me the specific command i'll try running it. I just tried a few debug commands it didn't go through. No ISDN support either.

Geez, I just found another one, this one is with the lab directives. Lab 28 in the standalone labs - Standard access lists. Tells you to configure three routers like so
Router1
int e0 - ip address 24.17.2.1 255.255.255.240
int s0 - ip address 24.17.2.17 255.255.255.240
Router2
Int e0 - Ip address 24.17.2.2 255.255.255.240
Router3 -
INT S0 - Ip address 24.17.2.18 255.255.255.240
They tell you to enable rip routing on those given interfaces, and after all is said and done, ping interfaces to verify routing. They give you this table, and tell you to configure it, or alternatively you can walk through there steps, step by step.
They use Rip version 1 in the instructions, funny, we are using VLSM.
The serial lines, all it tells you to do is configure ip addresses, doesnt tell you to set encapsulation.
I am beginning to distrust the Boson Netsim, if this is all I had to rely on, I would be in deep water. I am constantly verifying these on my home lab and have differences.

try enabling OSPF on an interface, and then come back to enable mode and type - Debug IP OSPF EVENTS, or just type "Debug IP ?" and see what they let you debug. I am curiuos, I am getting ready to drop this Netsim and raise a stink with Boson, but I want to make sure I have access to a good simulator, cant always use my home lab since I am traveling a lot for work the rest of the year.
kadshah
nope no output for debug .

lousy, the Boson CCNP Sim better. I actually bought that pre-release and got the CCNA netSim for free. I was really only after the CCNA netsim, but figured what the hell, CCNP will be expensive to build and will take me a while.

Do we get access to the help command in the actual CCNA exam or not. That is by typing question mark and proceeding accordingly.

Johnny... didnt recognize your name with the new avatar. I bought the CCNP Boson sim also and received the free CCNA. Remember... even though this product has its bugs... its better than nothing! Even though you are looking for 'behind the scenes' events... you cant even expect it to be reliable for debugs. But, once they finally make the final edits... I heard it is suppose to be a pretty sharp product.

Hehe, had to change the Avator, Football season is fast approaching, and we just dished out first preseason pummeling last night. I love seeing the rookies play, we are going to have another great team this year.
Having the CCNA NetSim has certainly been a blessing, it isnt really that bad, I can fully appreciate the lack of some functions, but some of the bugs are really dangerous, like the OPSF bug, you can apply the exact interface addresses and full wild masks, and it will accept the commands, but will not participate. The want you to use the inverse of the SM. So someone who doesnt have access to real cisco gear or knowledgable people could head into the CCNP thinking you cant do that. The other bugs I have found so far were obviuosly contradictory, so I dont think anyone would (or should) be taking those as the appropriate config methods.
