I am still in planning phases of a home lab. If I ran the host os as server 2012 with hyper v would the host os be a DC or would it best to have the whole lab all within hyper v?

You will want to put all of your servers in hyper-v as it isn't advisable to run any other roles on a hyper-v server.MCTS: Windows Vista, Configuration
