LEAP Motion - Death to the trackpad/Mouse

chrisonechrisone Member Posts: 2,278 ■■■■■■■■■□
OK death to the mouse for sure, but as soon as they fit this in laptops why would you use a trackpad?

I just ordered one for 80 bucks! this is amazing!

Still wondering what it is? lol

I remember running into this about a year or 2 ago. I had completely forgotten about it.

    Thanks for the reminder.

I think i'll hold on to my mouse, but one of these for messing around purposes would be interesting.

This is what I wanted when we were discussing the Surface Pro. I don't mind touching the screen on my tablet and I love the trackpad on my Macbook. This would make Windows 8 more intuitive for me since I don't think touch screen monitors are useful since I am sitting back from it.

I need to read up more on it before I preorder though. I need to see what it's limitations are.

How long can you realistically hold up your whole arms to navigate a vertical surface (and without any support)?

seems like a novel idea, but kinda of unpractical. reminds me of my uncle who's a music conductor, but much less elegant and structured hand movements.

You also lose a lot of accuracy with the lack of tactile feedback. I tried way back to use my wacom in a mouse mode with just hovering the pen above it to move and I found it extremely tiring. To me this definitely looks like a novelty item with a few specific uses that it would be good for. Definitely not for me for general use.

I just see it useful for navigating a UI like Windows 8 and web browsing.

    Is it compatible with win95b?

    eh..

I still prefer my KB to M any day, but to leave the M and pretend I have a room like like IronMan's lab or such...no thanks. There is likely a place for this toy, but I do not see it taking off. Sort of like the track-ball or the verticle mouse...everyone I knew was on the band-wagon for those items and they all reverted back to a standard mouse.

We shall see...but I think it will be ok for some applications, but not an absolute solution. As mentioned above, the wacom table was cool too, but even after a point those became annoying to use and I still don't like them for drawing let alone 'writing'.

It is definately a good start at changing the input device, but if you are going to wave your hand around, why not just use a touch screen?

    'i' before 'e' except after 'c'.... weird?

I think it would be useful on a HDTV or home theater PC where you can just use your hands to point and click instead of having a mouse and keyboard all the time

high end Samsung TV's have that feature, they use the built in camera to track your hand movements to control the TV, browse the net, play games etc.

I just got one of those TVs. The feature has a long ways to go. Couldn't get it to activate for the life of me just to test it out but if I scratched my nose during a movie it would activate easily.

    Very minority report.

Reminds me of the episode of the Regular Show where they enter the contest to win the megatron 9000 (or whatever the gaming controller was) and it ended it up sucking big time.

I like to lean on my elbows or sit back in my chair while I read on the computer. If this will work so I can flip through the pages of a PDF (Like the CIW books!) without changing position, it's totally worth it.

There are cheap finger mice "less than 5$" that can do that for you.

Had to laugh at the click bang finger gun. Notice the demo was all to do with games/novelties/maps. Of course you're not gonna get any work done with this device. I highly doubt that was ever the intention.

Would love to buy one for kicks, but nah.

I am strongly considering this for my HTPC. I'm tired of needing a wireless M&KB in my living room. This would greatly reduce my use of either.

I do think it could be fun to game on, but I agree that it's not going to replace mice and keyboards anytime soon.

my 3.5 years old son has a 23" PC with a touch monitor, few months ago I touched the screen to start a youtube video ..

He told me: No dad, you should use the mouse!

Oh look it's a Kinect for Windows ripoff. ;)

I get tired playing Kinect games with my kids. Maybe if I had to wave my arms around like a madman to control my PC I wouldn't be so fat. :P

I will get one and connect my PC to the TV in the computer room and see if I can find a Jarvis A.I.
