Well, for the CCNA you could go with Boson (I did). It is sufficient to master the CCNA setup and troubleshooting.
If you are moving ahead to CCNP you should build at least a very small lab.
Simulators will not be able to emulate all the stuff that can happen on the way to CCNP.
