Anyone Ever Get Turned Down For A Position & Then See The Position Posted Again?

This is mind blowing, well at least for me it is. I saw a position for a part time position with a company here in Chicago for IT. The position was level 1 support for clients having issues connecting the wireless network in the hospitality industry. Anyhow, I had to do a voice interview via an iPhone app to start the process. Did that and got called in for an interview. I thought I did well on the first interview and sure enough I was called back for a 2nd interview a couple of days later. 2nd interview was a quick meeting with the head guy at the company. A week later I get a denial email. I hop on Craigslist today to check out the postings and I see this same company hiring for the same position. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Some companies keep rolling out posting regardless. I wouldn't worry about it or even focus on it.

Good point. It was just mind boggling, but I have an interview for another IT position tomorrow afternoon so I need focus on that.

Just because you were rejected for a position doesn't mean the need for that position went away.

It happens a lot, don't take it personally. Hiring is not a case of posting a position, raking in the resumes, calling in the cream of the crop and picking one. There is a good chance that nobody quite fits the bill so they need to continue searching for someone they feel can do the job. It is possible they're being too strict on the requirements but there is nothing you can do about that and it will most likely only hurt them in the long run. Just focus on what you can control which is presenting as best you can how you can do the work profitably for the company when you come in for an interview.

I interviewed for a security position with a hospital when I had recently graduated. Had an interview with the IT manager and then brought back for an interview with the team then the VP (who said it was just a formality, if the team liked me I'd be hired). I felt things went very well and the position was a coop position, but was converted to full time. A week later I got the email saying I didn't get the position. Back to the job boards I went and found that they posted for the position at my University, but advertised it as a coop position. It take it for what it is and move on, not anything you can do about it so why worry.

You and the other competitors didn't get the job but don't worry some other will, eventually haha.

Don't focus on that and focus in the other interview to do better. Good luck.

Happens all the time, including to me recently. Was for a asst network admin job at a CPA firm. HR loved me, said she would call the following week to set up interviews. She called and said I didnt make the cut, they decided to go with people who had less experience for interviews. Well, low and behold, the position is back online again. Perfectly fine by me! I ended up on another interview, and got the verbal offer this morning. More money, better benefits, etc.

I think what makes this so "mind blowing" is that as the applicant, each job you go after is a very personal thing. You start to think about what you would do with the job, questions you will be asked, how nice the break room looked, if this works out long-term you can get that new car, etc. By applying for a position you have an investment in the outcome.

The company however needs to fill a position. Period. If anything they are sitting around thinking about how mind blowing it is that they have to repost it.

As others have said, it happens.

Now, please remind me of this in the future as I start to apply for jobs as I am sure I will have many similar situations come up, "Why didn't I get an interview? I am a perfect fit for that job description!"

Several jobs ago something like this happened. Went in for a series of interviews for a help desk position. Director told me it was narrowed down to me and one other guy. They went with the other guy. Couple of months later, job comes open again. I call the person I interviewed with and asked if I would be eligible to interview with them again. They pretty much just brought me in for an informal talk as an "interview" and said the position was mine. Turns out the other guy they hired didn't work out. :shrug:

I dunno how long ago your interviews were from the time you saw the job posting again, but it's possible they hired someone and it didn't work out. Or they were told they couldn't fund the position and ended up getting the money. Or they didn't like anyone in that round of interviews. No telling.

I'd say don't take it personally, but there's not too many things more personal than being able to make an income. So try not to take it too hard.

Same thing happened to me.
I said "thank you for the opportunity" and sent an email every few weeks saying "Im still interested", "hey how are things going with IT" blah blah.

Few months later I got called back for another interview. Guy the picked over me quit and I got the job

Yes a few times. The last time was weird though. I told the employer that I see their ad on career builder all the time, then he proceeded to tell me it’s always up. There are a MSP in MN.

I interviewed for the position about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Sometimes, it's more important to find the right person for a position, than it is to fill the position right away. Imagine you're a new parent, and you want a sitter so you can have a date night. Would you: (a) take whomever you can find by the next weekend or (b) wait a month or two until you found one you could trust? It's the same for many businesses.

You weren't right for that position, but you may be perfect for others!

There is also a disconnect between the hiring managers and HR sometimes. I interviewed for a position about 2 months ago and got word that the position was not going to be filled due to budget reasons. That same position is still posted on Dice.com.....

One funny story that happened to me.

One time I interviewed for a company that posted they wanted someone with "Microsoft and MCSE certification". I thought I had it in the bag. At the end of the interview, the lady said that I didn't meet all of their requirements. Apparently I had an MCSE certification, but I didn't have my "Microsoft" certificate.

A couple of weeks later, the ad was posted again. This time, it had the text: "Microsoft AND MCSE certification required. NO EXCEPTIONS"

I think I got the better end of that deal.

A couple of years ago, I applied for a network engineer position in a large advertising company and got a phone interview. During the interview, everything was going well until I said I manage three different sites. The hiring manager instantly said: "With just three sites, you don't know how to calculate VLSM". Before giving me a chance to say something, he ended the interview. After a couple of weeks the position disappeared from the job sights but then kept re-appearing a few more times during that year. Every time I saw it appear again, it made me feel lucky for being instantly disqualified.

I used to work for a company that left positions posted... All... The... Time... Even if they weren't actively hiring.

I went for an interview a while ago, I was living in another state. The phone interview went great. They asked me to come up for an interview, 4 hours away. I spent 2 hours with them and they called saying that the posting was put on hold and they'd call me back. Never heard from them again. Happens...
