CCNA Security down and out :)

ajmatsonajmatson Member Posts: 289
Well with the changes to the Cisco Exams and my work wanting the CCNA Security I bit the bullet and jumped from the CCENT to the IINS 640-554 exam today. Happily I scored a 938/1000 on it. While I didnt have the "full" CCNA background (on paper at least, I am actually taking the ICND2 in a few weeks :)). The one thing without giving away anything NDA was one of the CCP Sims (I wont say which one) after entering the information the box for "Deliver Configuration to Device" did not come up. I use CCP a lot at work and this did not allow me to save and deliver the changes. Not too upset because I passed but would have had a better score icon_sad.gif Oh well.

Anywho used for this exam:
Sybex 640-553 Book (minus the SDM stuff)
CBT Nuggets 640-554
Physical Lab / GNS3

Cheers :)

Congrats!! I'm working on my CCNA Security right now as well. For the exam I know CCP is very important but you have to know all the commands that go with it?

Thank you :) I don't want to give too much away to be border line NDA but I will say what you need to know about the CCP, the CBT Nuggets will show you :) Just practice with it and you will be fine (I was able to get it working with GNS3 as well). Keith Barker from CBT does very well covering the material for the exam.

It's not necessary to use "Deliver Configuration to Device".

Congrats on the pass. I am studying for that now hoping to take the test in June. If you don't mind me asking, which version CCP did you use and which router did you use to practice in GNS3?

For the routes I used the 7200 images, they seemed to be the most stable for me. For CCP I used version 2.6 which was the version used in the CBTs and the books. It was a bit flaky with the GNS3 routes. I kept looking connection when trying to deliver the commands to the router. I used my 2801 Physical router for anything I needed saved but it will work enough with GNS3 to learn it :)

Great score. How long did you spend preparing after finishing the ICND I?

About 2 years :), no really I did the CCENT about two years ago but at work I was sudo-promoted so I travel onsite to customers now. While not an official requirement for the job there has been talks about my company wanting vendor certs (Cisco Certs, Juniper Certs, F5 certs, etc) so I jumped ahead grabbed it. I honestly prepared for less than a month but studied for 4+ hours a day. I did it backwards too I did the CCNA Security before doing the ICND2 which I am doing now :)

    Hey guys,

I just purchased Chris Bryant's CCNA Security and I'm about to start diving into it.

I've had a read through some posts and it seems like I would need the following:

    GNS3 - with 7200 or 3725
    PC with CCP installed.

I also have 3 2600's and 1 3550(emi). Would these devices be any good for the cert?

I understand I wouldn't need an actual ASA for the exam as it just talks about ASA's but no config is involved?

    Thanks

Without breaking NDA, there is some "ASA" configuring you can play with but nothing that I found too involved. For that you can use the ASA on GNS3 if you need but you are correct the routers and CCP are the biggest content I found. It is mainly IOS security and a dabble in ASA security.
