A new Phase
Hey everyone I just signed up on this site a few days ago. What a great site, wish I had found it sooner. There is a wealth of knowledge and info on here that will be so helpful to me. I have been computer tech for 7 years and have done desktop support, pc install/maintenance. basic network workgroup installs and fixed about every kind of printer in house and onsite. Well I recently graduated with a degree in electrical and computer engineering, and want to start back up in the I.T. Career field. My goal is to one day become a network security specialist. What steps do I need to take to obtain this goal, and what type of job should I apply for to work toward this goal. Thank for all your help sorry it is so long just wanted to give you an idea of where I am coming from.

Ricka182 Member Posts: 3,359Hey Mike, welcome aboard. This site is an endless resource of knowledge, and sometimes more importantly, encouragement. I've been a member here for a couple of years, and probably wouldn't have what I have for certs if not for it. Do you hold any certs yourself right now?
Also, I just noticed you posted the same in two forums. There is no need for that here, you will get more responses if you avoid double-posting. Not a big deal, just advice. Again, welcome!!i remain, he who remains to be.... -
neo468 Member Posts: 123I currently have HP Printer repair certs. At this point I know that certs are beneficial, but am not sure which ones are necessary for me.1's and 0's

shadown7 Member Posts: 529I'd start out with the Security + exam. That exam is considered an entry level security cert.

Ricka182 Member Posts: 3,359I would start with Network+ and Security+, both from Comptia, a vendor-neutral organization. They are entry level certs for those fields, and will give you a good base on each. Check out www.comptia.com for more info there. Also, browse around the fourms, as at least half of your answers will already be here.i remain, he who remains to be....

Ricka182 Member Posts: 3,359MCSE is more of an advanced cert. It is structured for those whohave worked in a similar environment before. If you were interested in M$ certs, take a look at MCSA, which is somewhat of a junior MCSE. A+ probably isn't neccessary with that kind of experience. Take a look at the objectives and see if you are familiar with it requires. If not, maybe you could learn a few things. I still think the Comptia exams would give you some good info, especially the Sec+, as you mentioned you were looking towards Security.i remain, he who remains to be....
