4500 problem driving me nuts!

wildfirewildfire Member Posts: 654
Ive got the wierdest problem with one of the routers on my rack. I have a cisco 4500 that just does strange things. I cant get the serial interfaces to come up with some cables!

I have a series of back to backs which I know work fine because they work on other links, however I plug one into the 4500 it wont work, plug another in it will work, then plug a third in an bingo they all stop working!! It doesnt matter wether I use the DCE or DTE end, problem is getting a combo of cables to work, I spend hours matching them up, turn it off and then bingo they dont work! so I have to swap around!

    Sir/Madam,

It sounds like a possible operator error to me. I would suggest that you get a technician to have a look at it for you, someone with a CCNA might be able to sort it out.

    Kind Regards....

    oogabooga,
wildfire does have his CCNA and CCDA, and is almost CCNP.
He also has a website with an extensive Rack full of Cisco Equipment, which he has setup and offer FREE rack time for his fellows at Techexams.
I think YOU need to take a look at who you are talking to. He is VERY knowledgable about Cisco equipment.

If you cannot help, maybe you shouldn't post to his question.

wildfire: are you having that problem with all the serial inerfaces on your router, or just one?

yeah all the serial interfaces on this one router! I know they can work, but it likes one cable one day then a different one the next! I cant imagine what caused it, I thought someone might have seen something like it in the past.

i can't say i have seen that one yet, i have a 4700 with 1 nm-4t. have you tried to upgrade your code? does it happen on a certain nm? if so i would TS that one with no other cards.. and reseat it in the same or different slot and see what happens.. i had a similar issue with a 3660 with a mis-seat

I will try flashing the IOS tommorow. Its on both card (2x NP-4T) Its frustrating me as its not a clear fault, plus 4500 dont support the show diag command so I cant check the modules IO

Ok, I had a problem with my 4500 that absolutely drove me nuts. It is not the same thing that you are going through, but I definately know the headaches. One time I plug in the DCE end and it won't let me place the clock rate command. Another time it will, with the same cable. Each time it was completely different. One moment it will except it another time it won't and it did it for all my four serial interfaces. The only thing that fixed it was upgrading the IOS image.

    I have a 4506 with a supervisor IV.
I just got the newest IOS from Cisco. 12.2.25EWA1 I think. If you want it I can send it to you.
  • wildfirewildfire Member Posts: 654
ok I will upggrade it today, dont worry about sending me it I have a cco account. I wll let you know how a get on, Mattos I noticed it also does what you said as I plug the dce end and it says clock rate command only applies to DCE interfaces! arrggg

I had this issue happen to me but not on a 45xx router. I ended up re-imaging with the same image and it cleared the problem. It was stated that once the image un-compressed... it became corrupted.

I know this answer was all ready provided but just giving you my experience.
