How would you respond to these two interview questions?

I am wondering what kind of response you would give to these two interview questions. They popped up recently, and I mentioned a few things but I am not sure if I missed out on anything key they were looking for.
  • If you were moving applications from physical to virtual servers, what metrics would you need to consider. What metrics for Java/.NET apps.
  • Same as it applies from moving SANs from point A to B.

I've worked with web services and tested .net applications and listed below are some metrics I have picked up along the way.
    Availability
Response time - seeing if the web services times out before receiving a reply from the web server
    Response of acknowledgment

I have no clue about storage.

Just found this site, you may want to take a look at it.

For the web server it would be CPU, RAM & network usage. For the SAN latency.

I believe that dave brought up most of what I was going to say.

Another thing I would have brought up is confirming compatibilities.

I mean, is the first case an application that was physical migrating to virtual?
And is the second case the storage being moved from one location to another, and you're worried about the storage migration, or are you physically moving the SAN? Or, is it an issue of accessing the storage, if it's located elsewhere?

If concerned about the movement of the stored data to another SAN the size of the pipe would be a major concern over latency. If accessing storage that used to be more local that now moved remote, then latency would be chief concern.

I guess answering this question fully kinda depends on the picture presented.

    Hope this helps.

For Java apps you would probably need to retune the JVM so using jconsole you could get various metrics like threads, heap stats, GC efficiency, memory allocation, etc.

Also, for the SAN move, you would want to confirm that SAN B meets or exceeds the IOPs capabilities.
