Requesting a letter of recommendation?

Hey all,

I left my last job about half a year ago on good terms: lived out my two weeks, congratulated by my team lead on the new opportunity, encouraged to contract him if things didn't work out, etc. Now that things have calmed down with the new job, i am making sure my résumé is up to par in case that big opportunity comes along.

My previous employer was a fortune 500 and i believe a letter of recommendation would be a great thing to have. My team lead and i worked very well together and i would like to ask for a letter of recommendation from him. Does anyone have any advice on how i should approach this situation? I spoke with him a month or two ago and should have taken the opportunity to ask him then but the thought didn't even cross my mind.

I was thinking an email would be the best option but perhaps a call would be more appropriate for this kind of a request.

Don't bother with letter of recommendation. Just ask him if he's ok with you listing him as a reference.

Reference is the best option. Also make a linkedin profile and get recemendations that way! I have 4 and one from my boss. I just put the link on my resume.

+1 - Just ask if you may use him as a reference. I tend to avoid putting colleagues' personal info on resumes that I submit to job sites because I don't want them to be pestered. I share them only with serious prospects.
