Passed phone interview now on to formal interview for junior systems engineer?

Hey I passed a phone interview yesterday for junior systems engineer position which thanks to my linked in profile got me the phone interview. I guess my resume does suck not even people hear wanted to answer lol. Anyways she liked me and answer the tech questions all good except for one which dealt with exchange which I dont have any experience in it.

It seems to revolve around active directory a bit and work in a NOC environment and just want someone who can keep up and learn quick. I really want this finally a way to get real experience in a real IT job.

Just afraid on what to expect on my in person interview could it be more tech questions or just want to see how i am or both.

I havent been getting a luck getting into a big IT company since I graduated with a BSc in IT and over time got my A+ and MCTS Windows 7 Config.

I do want to get into networking and studying for my Cisco certifications but want to also know should I mention that or that might scare them off thinking I will leave because its not the field they are. (To be honest I dont even know)

Right now I'm just brushing up on active directory skills and getting familiar with exchange.

Anybody have anything I should expect? I never did anything but helpdesk/on the phone with usual problems (viruses,outlook,password resets) and maybe rare big problems which were fun but thats it.

I understand you're looking for info on the next step - but I'm sure there are those amongst us (myself included) that would looove to know how the first interview went down.

The interview started by telling me that I was called first of all because of my linked in profile. I put my linked in link in my resume but the interviewer stated that I had more information on what I did in my past and more achievements than I had on my resume. Basically saying work on my resume because I wouldnt be given a look at all even though I would be good enough.

The next step was to ask me more in depth on my past jobs and confirm anything she wanted clarification on. After I went into more depth the interviewer just kept saying wow after I threw the numbers and what I went thru that a simple description on a piece of paper cant tell. Definitely repeating I need to better my resume and etc.

After confirming that I worked on active directory to be ok for the role and had helpdesk experience with lots of customers that I sound like a good fit so far. I did say I never really dealt with exchange but thats about it.

Next step came the tech questions and the interviewer wanted simple answers dont go into depth on it just want to know I know what it is or what to do in general. Told me that not looking for me to answer all questions correct so dont worry.

Got a couple of questions like how do you check latency on a computer?
renew and release ip addresses?
can you share a network while having the domain down?
how do you delegate in outlook?
what does OU and GAL stand for?
how do you modify start up programs?

I got everything right except GAL and i wasnt clear on the interviewer wanted the delegate question so that one was skipped. The startup question I wasn't clear because the way the wording was and missed it (msconfig) but after understanding it I went into depth on msconfig and trying to make sure I did know.

Did say I got the network sharing question right and most people get that one wrong which made me feel good for a second lol.

So far the interviewer was very eager to meet me personally and called me 5 minutes after the interview to set up the formal interview.

So thats how it went and I'm just wondering what to expect? It sounds like a great opportunity and it is to work in a NOC environment with Noc manager and just want someone who can be taught and keep on top of technology etc.

What you just passed was a phone screen--a basic check that you met the minimum requirements for the position. Most companies cannot afford to interview everyone who applies, so these checks are there to thin out the herd.

When you appear in person, I would expect a full interview covering everything from technical to soft skills to prior experiences to HR. Come prepared to rock their world vs. all the others who they have or will interview.

If you're certain you want to get into networking soon, I would be forthcoming. You career aspirations may make this a better or worse role for you, and I'd rather confront that up-front. If you're wishy-washy about it, then I wouldn't mention it at all. I try to present myself as honestly and accurately as possible and that tends to guide me towards the right role.

(Then again, I'd have no qualms about "losing" a position that is not right for me.)
