24 port recomendations

qwertyiopqwertyiop Member Posts: 725 ■■■□□□□□□□
Hey guys, I looking for a inexpensive 24 port switch but my issue is that I need a 24-port switch with one separate uplink over cat5e. I know they exist but im looking for some inexpensive recommendations. Hopefully in the sum $100 range.

This would be for a training room.

Hey qwerty, uplink ports are sort of a thing of the past. Any new switch you buy these days can hook-up with another switch via cat5 on any port. The only reason there were uplink ports was so you didn't have to have a crossover cable. Now days switches have auto-MDIX so you don't have to have a crossover cable or an "uplink" port.

I'm a fan of Cisco or HP.

Cisco's 2960s are great as are HP's 2910ALs. You could also get an older model since it's for a lab. You can get dirt-cheap Cisco 2950s or even HP 2824s.

I think a 2950 would suffice. We use one for our training room here.

I understand that uplink port has been replaced with the new auto-uplink on any port but the reason that I need one with an actual uplink is that the switch would connect 24 jacks and the area only has one uplink to our data center due to its odd location.

I know this one is cheap but have any of you used these: NeweggBusiness - TRENDnet TEG-424WS Smart 24 x 10/100Mbps Auto-MDIX Fast Ethernet ports 4 x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-MDIX Gigabit ports 2 x 1000Base Mini-GBIC slots (shared with Gigabit port 25-26) Web Smart Switch w

HP 1810G - works well. Or, like others have stated, Cisco 2950T will work brilliantly. The Cisco 2950T has 10/100 ports and 2 1000 ports.

Just be sure you research whatever switch you go with in depth. Some switches that have the additional SFP ports or gig ports are an either/or. Meaning if it has 24 ports of 10/100/1000 and 2 SFP slots, plugging in a GBIC into the SFP slot will grey out one of the 24 ports of 10/100/1000 making it a 23 port 10/100/1000 + 1 live SFP port

For $100 I would buy an HP 2510s off ebay. It has 24 10/100 ports and 2 10/100/1000 dual personality ports. I think the (g) model is 26 ports, all gigabit. Based on my search on ebay you should be able to get the "g" model for $100.

I could also suggest HP 2626. It has 24 10/100 ports + 2 dual personality ports. It costs about $60 to $100.

Wouldn't recommend any of the so-called "smart" or "web-managed" switches because of the lack of CLI.

    Amazon.com: Buying Choices: Cisco WS-C2950G-24-EI Catalyst 2950G 2 GBIC Slots 24-Port 10/100 Switch

those are cisco 2950G's ...they have the GBIC slots in them but you can get the converter for dirt cheap as well for that slot for your up link...

    Edit:
here is a link to what the converter looks...I am sure you can find it cheaper with a little Google action
