subnetting-VLAN and 2960 catalyst switch

SherraSherra Member Posts: 8 ■□□□□□□□□□
Hello,

If i connect users belonging to 3 different subnets (different departments) on the same switch, Will i need to put them in separate VLAN ,or can i just connect them directly to the switch without being afraid of them sharing the same information?

If you want to keep them separate, then you should have them in different VLANs. Then you would need a layer 3 device in order for them to communicate.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the 2960 switch has routing capabilities.

As long as they are in seperate Vlans. You will be fine icon_cool.gif
the 2960 switch is just a ACCess switch. ON the CCNA level you would used a router "router on a stick" which is used to route between vlans.

Download Packet Tracer and make a few scenarios.

No. You are thinking of the 3550/3560. These two are Layer 3 switches and can perform routing.

The 2960 supports limited L3 routing (just statics from what I remember) on certain IOS images.
