How does the A+ / Net+ / Server+ combo look to employers in comparison to the A+ / Net+ / Security+ combo?

As of now, I have both A+ and Net+ for life as I attained them before the ce program went into effect. Personally I dont feel as though ANY CompTIA cert is worth the extra time and money to renew, and that the whole switch was just a money grab. At the time, the A+ and Net+ helped me land jobs, and I now have work experience dating back to 2008 (soon after I was net+ certified). Is the Server+ worth pursuing at this point or would I be better off studying for a cert that holds more weight?

I look at the Server+ exam as sort of like "A+ Advanced." It's a natural progression after the A+ in terms of study material. If you are interested in Server+, you should obtain it before CompTIA rolls it into their new CE program.

Vender Certs renew CompTIAs.
When I get my CCENT, both my Net+ and A+ get renewed. When I get my CCNA, those 2 get renewed AGAIN.
If I then go for the CCNA-Sec, all 3 of them get renewed.

You could view the CE program as a "money grab" or be more optimistic and think that it's incentive/motivation to not become stagnant/complacent. I don't think it'd be that difficult to pass 1 or 2 new certs every 3 years.

Get Net+ problem solved. A+ is fairly useless on its own anyways, i passed with flying colors when i was like 16 lolz

I'm pretty sure most certs than renew Net+ renew A+ automatically.
Even if that isn't true, the A+ is the easiest cert to keep active from actually completing the CE requirements. I'm not too worried tbh.

But I'm glad the project+ is a lifetime cert. I was planning on getting it eventually.
I'm not too sure about the Server+ tho.. hearing it's a lifetime cert def makes it seem more alluring. But idk if the cert is worth the time/money spent to get it. =/

Apparently a lot of people don't. I mentioned this in a thread in the past and got "negative reputation" from people, saying I was giving incorrect info. Which is why i included the link this time lol

ya i probably wont get server+, dont think its worth it when you could get CCNA, CCENT, or something more valued for a few more $.

i honestly am questioning the value and doubting if alot of people would recognize any comptia certs other than the flagship ones (A+, Net+, Sec+). for example, why get project+ when you could get CAPM, PMP, or something better?

but i guess if u just have money to spend on lower-level certs like these its not a problem though. hell, ive heard of someone dropping $5k+ on A+ study material lol.

Well, I'm in the process of transferring over to WGU and one of their classes requires the Project+.

I've self studied all my certs so far + my parents pay for the actual vouchers. So I don't feel guilty buying $50 worth of study materials and getting my $200 vouchers paid for. The CompTIAs seem to be great foundational knowledge and they've so far helped me decided how I want to structure my future path. I plan on going the CompTIA route in the future for IT areas I'm interested in but not familiar w/ as opposed to diving right into mid-level certs.

I plan on adding the Proj+ and Linux+ certs to what I have now, then climbing up the Cisco vender path.

SUN, Microsoft or CCNA are the life time valid certifications. You can get profit from one of them. These all are belong from different technology. So you can choose any one from them. You can see more certification courses on Xcerts. It is a training institute and also provide study material.

No interest in backing up to re-do N+ as it doesn't seem to be a required cert. for employment & I'm currently pursuing ICND1. A+ is the main cert. asked for where I live, so I definitely don't consider it useless on its own. I wish I had kept mine up-to-date.

Na, while I do value Comptia certs, the CE program for me is a money grab. I've passed the A+, Network+, Security+, Server+ (pre them needed to be renewed) and have done alot higher and continue to do so. I don't need to continually do the higher certs and pay Comptia a fee every 3 years so that my "lower" certs are up to date. I can think of other things to spend my money on.

Imagine at interview...

Interviewer: Oh I see you have a degree and a post grad qualification. Ah, I see, you have your MCSAs and MCSEs (both the old style and new style) and your MCTS and MCITP. Oh wait, sorry you can't hire you, your A+ and Network+ aren't up to date...

It's not as straight forward as "life time valid certifications". With the old style MCSE and MCSA, yes they were, but now a days it's different. They'll retire and get "Legacy" status.

at first, i was thinking this too but after learning that theyd automatically be renewed as long as you keep your higher-level certs up to date (which shouldnt be a problem), its not that bad now that i think about it...

I know you don't have to pay the annual CE fee to update your CompTIAs to by passing a higher level CompTIA exam.
However, you probably DO have to pay the annual CE fee to update your CompTIA exams via higher level vender certs.

I'm not too sure tho. But if so, then the the CE program would be a little less alluring.
I'm aiming to pass the CCENT in a week or 2 and the CCNA sometime this summer, so I guess by then I'll know first-hand just how easy it is to keep my CompTIA up to date.

You are correct. If you take and pass a higher level CompTIA cert exam, all of the lesser eligible CompTIA certifications are automatically renewed with no additional fees required. If you take an exam from a different vendor that is able to be applied toward the CE program, you must still pay the relevant fees to remain part of the CE program.

IIRC, part of the renewal process that helps set the timeline is the payment of those fees. As I read it, if I got a CE cert and then earned a cert from another vendor that would renew my CompTIA CE certifications I could wait until the end of my three years and pay the dues all at once. My CE certs would then renew and I would have three more years before I have to mess with it again.

Again, this is how I read the rules, reality may be entirely different.

For the people that just keep saying the CE program from CompTIA was a money grab, a little education.

DoD 8570.01-M lists certification requirements for IA positions in the US Military. One of the requirements is that those certifications are ISO 17024 compliant (as accredited by ANSI). CompTIA had that rule waived because they missed one requirement, a continuing education program. They implemented one so that they met ISO 17024 standards and could remain a relevant certification body.

It had nothing to do with wanting to get more money out of those that were already certified, it had everything to do with complying with international and DoD standards.

They are a non-profit trade body that uses the funds that they generate to better what they do and provide. They have wages to pay, bills to pay, programs that they have to develop, research to fund, etc... This ain't free. So to say that it's not a money grab would be incorrect - however the term used can be insensitive (a better term used would be better).

The OSCP is valid for lifetime but if you look at other pen testing certs you may: retake the exam after 2-3 years, take a new exam, or apply some form of Continuing Education Credits.

The CIW exams are lifetime. The only reason why I have known someone to take it is because they were students or alumni of WGU.

The CCNA is not a lifetime credential. There may have been something a long time ago but as far as I knew they had to be renewed. I know that my CCNA expired 5 or 6 years ago. CCNA Routing and Switching Recertification - IT Certifications and Career Paths - Cisco Systems
The same can be said for other Cisco certs.
