Is IPX still tested on the CCNA?

I noticed that IPX is on the practice exams here on TechExams but it was never covered in either of my books so I wondered if it is still tested anymore. I was able to find chapters on IPX in a book for the 640-507 exam.

I thought I removed all of them, but I just checked and that question about the encapsulation type for IPX is no longer valid for the current CCNA exam and will be removed.

    The current exam topics are:

    Planning & Designing
    • Design a simple LAN using Cisco Technology
    • Design an IP addressing scheme to meet design requirements
    • Select an appropriate routing protocol based on user requirements
    • Design a simple internetwork using Cisco technology
    • Develop an access list to meet user specifications
    • Choose WAN services to meet customer requirements

    Implementation & Operation
    • Configure routing protocols given user requirements
    • Configure IP addresses, subnet masks, and gateway addresses on routers and hosts
    • Configure a router for additional administrative functionality
    • Configure a switch with VLANS and inter-switch communication
    • Implement a LAN
    • Customize a switch configuration to meet specified network requirements
    • Manage system image and device configuration files
    • Perform an initial configuration on a router
    • Perform an initial configuration on a switch
    • Implement access lists
    • Implement simple WAN protocols

    Troubleshooting
    • Utilize the OSI model as a guide for systematic network troubleshooting
    • Perform LAN and VLAN troubleshooting
    • Troubleshoot routing protocols
    • Troubleshoot IP addressing and host configuration
    • Troubleshoot a device as part of a working network
    • Troubleshoot an access list
    • Perform simple WAN troubleshooting

    Technology
    • Describe network communications using layered models
    • Describe the Spanning Tree process
    • Compare and contrast key characteristics of LAN environments
    • Evaluate the characteristics of routing protocols
    • Evaluate TCP/IP communication process and its associated protocols
    • Describe the components of network devices
    • Evaluate rules for packet control
    • Evaluate key characteristics of WANs

So, ISDN and Frame Relay are also out? since i'm not seeing them under the topics you provided - or do they fall under WANs?

ISDN and Frame Relay are definitely in... and they do fall under WANS

I would say it's possible IPX could be included as one of the possible wrong answers for a question, but its highly unlikely you got an actual question on IPX.

well at any rate you should know the basics about it or it may prove to be a point to pass or a point to fail

Only IP is on the test now, our Channel Partner training adminstrator concurs, as well as all of the current study materials. IPX lost its hold in the market when Novell migrated to offer IP in version 5, and completely abandoned IPX in version 6.
