How to get to that engineering position?

Hello all,

What's the quickest way to get an engineering-level job? I'm currently working in a NOC. This is my first networking-related job and I've only just completed my first year here. The job is OK but I'm doing extremely basic networking stuff. Lower than CCENT level and there's no hope of promotion here. I'd like a job where I can work with OSPF/BGP/MPLS, etc. Service provider stuff. So what's the quickest way to get a job like that? I'm about to finish up my CCNP and I know it'll help but I've only got a year of experience. What's the quickest way to get to that engineering position?

You're already doing the quickest thing. Getting some experience and some certifications to back it up.

So essentially there's no way to get a job like that with less than 5 years in the industry? No matter what certs I have?

You might find someone to take a chance on you. If you go to school you might be able to get your foot in the door through some sort of graduate program. Just remember for engineering roles you are going against guys that have more experience, certifications and education than you. Have to make yourself stand out or at least be competitve in the market.

Apply for a job where you have higher level networking responsibilities, or try to move up in your current job.
