Is it worth it?

I am getting out of the military soon and will be looking for positions. Has anyone used Job Seeker? Do you actually get a lot more hits from recruiters? Worth the $20 - $30???

I can't say... Recruiters are pretty much hunting people down from LinkedIn. Between the groups you join and the contacts you have on a free account I'd think that should be enough.

Great article hoktauri. Unfortunately, it doesn't address the one reason why I was actually considering the Basic Job Seeker package ($20/month). And that reason is, being moved to the top of recruiter searches that pertain to your credentials. I agree that additional "InMail" messages are a waste (and actually, these aren't even included in the basic package). I think I may pay for a month and see if my contacts from recruiters drastically increase. I'll let everyone know how it goes. Worst case scenario, its $20 lost.

I signed up for a month couple of years ago, and was quite peeved that I received zero improvement on seeing who had viewed my profile. It still had the same generic 'someone in the underwater basket weaving industry in Omaha' not the specific person, so I ditched them. I was getting tons of views from recruiters and I thought it would be easier to follow up with someone who came across my profile.

I was hoping to hear from someone who had actually subscribed to Job Seeker. So thanks for the insight colemic

I wouldn't waste the money. Dice.com, clearancejobs.com, powerjobs.com, and all the other jobs sites have provided me with more than enough exposure to recruiters. And for those one-off companies (Visa, Boeing) that i'm interested in that never seem to advertise their jobs on those sites, I just go visit the career sections of their sites and apply that way.

I took advantage of a free month and didn't see any real improvement. I applied for one position as a "Favored Applicant" or whatever they call it, but I haven't heard anything from that company. Of course, only one application means nothing...

The one thing I was hoping to take advantage of was the salary range in job searches, but I have found that to be less than accurate. I had one with a filter of $80,000+ and it selected a job that clearly stated it would pay $65-70,000. I know it isn't meant to be 100% accurate, but I hoped for something better than that.

I actually planned to cancel today so it wouldn't auto-renew, but apparently I was a day off and I needed to cancel it yesterday so I will see if this next month brings me any better results.

FWIW, I have received exactly ZERO calls or emails that I can trace back to LinkedIn; all of mine have been from my resume on Dice.com.

I have not signed up for the job seeker account, but thought I would chime in that LinkedIn is how I just got my new position. I don't even have that many connections, but I get contacted by recruiters every once in a while. They just search on key works in your profile.

Side note - what branch of the military are you in? I grew up in San Antonio on Randolph Air Force base!

I'm Air Force. I work for a joint unit, so I actually do work on Randolph, Lackland and Ft Sam.

Unrelated question... I noticed several ex-military guys asking for critiques. I have a good friend that's a reservist and she's bailing too. Is there a reason so many people are getting out?

Hutch, I never used it personally, but my ex did for a while. She said it was a waste because you don't get much difference than the free way.

I seem to get plenty of calls when I am not even looking for a job so I can't see it really being worthwhile.

To the OP, take a look at this article on PBS on Linkedin's scheme. It's basically what most of us on TE already know about so-called endorsements, job seeker premium, and the promise of jobs, but written much more eloquently.

If you're AD or a Veteran, you can get Job Seeker for free for SIXTY, yes 6-0 MONTHS. I just signed up last month.

1. Go to linked-in
2. Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner and then select "Help-Center"
3. Click "Contact Us" at the top
4. In the message box write something along the lines of "I am an Active Duty (or veteran) servicemember and I am writing because I want to take advantage of the free 60 month premium membership for servicemembers and veterans."

That's all. They wrote me back the next day with an e-mail link to the sign-up page. You still have to enter your CC information but will only be charged after the 60 months is up.
