clock rate 8000000?

The text book always used clock rate 64000 for serial connections between routers. I did "clock rate ?" and see it has a big range. I tried the highest speed of 8000000 on my home lab and it works. So is there a reason that text books always use 64000?

Since speed is important, should we use the highest clock rate at a work environment?

The clock rate is set on the DCE side, i.e., by your service provider. In a real work environment, you wouldn't normally set the clock rate, and your service provider would set the clock rate dependent on how much you paid them.

Yes and understand that there's a difference between acceptable values (what's listed above) and realistic values. An 8 Mb serial connection may work within your lab with very short cable runs and no intervening equipment, but an actual WAN link rated at that speed would cost an arm and a leg.
